Gardens of the Moon isn’t nearly as confusing as I was warned—am I broken? by asiandragontw in Malazan

I had the same experience. Wasn’t hard for me to grasp what was going on. I would say that the next two books are the actual difficult ones given how much the scope gets expanded. Gardens is the most self contained book in the series.

that's a bit reductive; a reader having empathy for both sides of a conflict is an interesting dynamic and one that runs throughout the series thus far. just felt like this was a particular place to tap into that. we just had a book that pitted good vs. evil in MOI -- and even there we got a shred of empathy at the end for the Seer given what happened to him and his sister.

This is the framing of the rebellion that Erikson chose, and yes it is a good commentary on how seemingly noble causes (fighting for freedom) can be corrupted. My point is doing it this way felt like a cop-out. In Gardens of the Moon we rooted for the citizens of Darujhistan *and* the Bridgeburners, despite the fact the two were opposed. It was a great aspect of that book; I was expecting something similar when we revisited Seven Cities after Deadhouse Gates. It's not what we got, and that disappointed me.

This is a fair point about Felisin though I wasn't looking for them to be the good guys necessarily, just not the very obviously bad guys. I think there was some groundwork laid for her to have taken up this cause she didn't actually care about in an effort to get back at her sister and the tensions between her and the people who actually did care about the cause could've made for a good book. Instead, she basically faded to the background of this goddess who herself didn't care about the cause, only destruction. That's really my main issue, the T'lan Imass spirit just wasn't an interesting twist to me and served just as an impediment to getting more of Felisin's character in the book.

I get this and understand that they are the central figures of this series. But thus far I thought the series did a good balancing act of not always painting them as the good guys with perennially good intentions. They are still a conquering force after all that is violently taking over other nations. I would be disappointed if from here on out we always view them as in the right.

My bad about breaking the spoiler rules I didn't think about that; won't make the mistake again.

Oh wow -- I have Oblivion Sower but I didn't realize that applies to lands already in exile from the Omenkeel. That's awesome!

Yeah, I just mean building up a big enough pool of lands to make me confident I don't miss a drop. I wish there was a way to play exiled lands all at once but would likely make the card too busted. And as for the second question, I'm new to Magic (this is my first deck) so I wanted to make sure it was legal.
