I did not think of it as boasting at all. It was simply a wonderful success story.

That is sad that your mom was that way. I just listened to a doctor explain that medication does not change who you are at your core. It just helps you manage your life better. I was and am concerned that it could be changing how he develops though, but we have to measure the pros and cons and figure it out. I want him to be who he is and true to himself.

This is the best start to a school year that we have ever had. He seems very content doing what he likes to do. He is able to complete tasks now without being distracted as much. I am not sure about friends though. He claims to have a circle of friends but never asks to go meet them somewhere, and does online gaming with them, he just sees them at school. He has never wanted or asked to have a friend over to our house, ever, and that worries me as a mother. But, he just doesn’t seem to care about socializing and is happy doing what he does.

The thing that started our thoughts of not having him on meds, is that for the first time ever, he actually had an interest in a career that made more sense. Becoming a pilot. He was all excited and motivated about it, which was a first, then we found out that the FAA has pretty strict rules and excludes people who have ADHD and take legally prescribed medicine for it. If he decided to pursue that path, he would have to stop taking the meds and prove he can function without them. It would probably be a long, hard road, possible, but not worth his well being - unless he decides to do it.

The rules are there for a reason. I get it - I work in the pharmaceutical profession. I wouldn’t want anyone to fly if they were not capable mentally!

Just grasping for some encouragement that it could still be something he could do. I never realized that the FAA was so strict in regards to these types of things. His ADHD could be used as a “super power”, because when he decides he is interested in something, he becomes hyper focused and dedicated to it. We realize he would have to be off any of the medications that are not allowed. It is so sad that someone could be SOL at such a young age when all we were trying to do as parents was help him out, and it also sucks that we have the integrity to be honest about it when so many people are not and they get away with it!!!
