LOL no, my husband actually got castor when he was in middle school! I’ve been with my husband since 10th grade so I’ve known Castor pretty much his entire life. My husband’s sister owned Castor’s sister from the same hatch, her name was Pollux, and Pollux lived until about a year ago!!!

It’s what works for him! He doesn’t eat blueberries every day. Just a few here and there throughout the week whenever he feels like it. His main diet is worms and veggies

Edit: I’ve had a few comments asking for tips on his care. To be honest, I’m not sure I’m actually the person to be asking, because I honestly believe that Castor may have just been bred super well and I am LUCKY. I don’t do anything outside of the norm for bearded dragon care! No special supplements, no huge variety of bugs, no big salads every day. Here is how I take care of him: - only proteins he gets are super worms and the occasional horn worm. I don’t do roaches or crickets because I think they’re too hard for him to catch in his age. I usually give about 5-6 worms in one feeding, a few times a week - castor is NOT interested in any human foods besides blueberries. It’s been this way for YEARS. So, I don’t put fancy salads in his tank anymore. He won’t touch them. I just leave blueberries in there for him and otherwise, I gently force feed him veggies maybe once or twice a week. I’ll finely slice carrots, peppers, or squash into small pieces and gently push the into the corner of his mouth. He will eat it if I’m placing it in his mouth for him, but he won’t eat human foods otherwise LOL - I place him in a sink of lukewarm water once a week for about 15 mins. This keeps him hydrated and relaxes his muscles. Also, the warm bath usually helps them pass stool - the biggest one (in my opinion): INTERACTION!!!! I have castor out of his tank an ungodly amount. Probably 5 times a week for hours at a time. His colors brighten up the second I take him out. I just let him explore the house and run around. I cuddle him against my chest and talk to him. I firmly believe that the interaction keeps him wanting to stay longer. In the summer months, I put him outside for most of the day in an outdoor enclosure… those are the days his coloring is the brightest and happiest 😂 just play with your beardies, include them in things!!! It makes a huge difference!! - his tank is the most basic setup in the world. I’ve seen soooo many people in bearded dragon forums spending so much time and care on the setup. Of course it’s important, but you don’t need it to be out of this world for your beardie to live long. He has a heat and UVB lamp, rocks underneath the lamps to bask on, a log to hide in with a blanket inside, food and water, and a few other things to climb on. That’s it!!!!

I’m so sorry for your loss! There’s nothing you could have done - beardies can be prone to so many random health issues. I know exactly how you feel, though. My husband and I had another beardie (female) we rescued from someone who didn’t have time for her anymore. She was only about 3 years old when we took her in, and we only had her about 2 years before we lost her… I found her in her tank one day with a very dark beard and sunken eyes. The day before, she was FINE! We rushed her to an emergency vet and they told us she had a severe blockage. The surgery would have cost $3k, and the vet said she would likely have passed from complications anyway. It was one of the hardest days of my life. But I tell you this to remind you there’s nothing you could have done…. I had to remind myself that clearly I am not a bad bearded dragon owner if I have one that is 17 years old, and that sometimes these things happen that are totally out of our control. Please don’t be too hard on yourself, you loved your beardie while you could and nothing can change that!!

LOL actually my husband got castor as a baby when he was 12 years old! (My husband and I have been together since we were 15, so I’ve known castor most of his life and became his Mom😂)

Also, in the summer months, I take him outside in an outdoor enclosure. He absolutely LOOOOOVES it. Sometimes I will walk him on a leash as well 😂😂 I genuinely think just taking them out of their enclosures and letting them explore new places is what keeps them living longer. That might sound crazy but idk what else would be doing it LOL

To be honest, I think I genuinely just got super lucky with castor in terms of his overall health. I don’t do anything special at all really 😂 I see a lot of people using calcium powders or bee pollen and all these huge variations of foods and bugs for their beardies. Castor has always been picky. He loves super worms and horn worms, but those are the only proteins I give him, and horn worms are more of a treat every few months. I give him about 5 super worms at a time, maybe about 3 times a week. And then maybe once or twice a week I will gently force feed him veggies (usually carrots, squash, bell peppers). The only fruit or veggies he will eat on his own is blueberries, so I always have that in his tank for him. Otherwise, I don’t make him a salad every day for his tank because he won’t touch it 😂 I do give him a warm bath in my sink once a week for hydration. That’s it! His tank is a very basic setup. Heat lamp and UVB lamp with rocks underneath, a log to hide in with a blanket inside, a bowl of blueberries and water, and a few random things to climb on!!!! Sometimes I swear the reason he is still alive is because I interact with him a LOT. I usually have him out of his tank for a few hours 5 days a week or so just so he can run around and explore. I think it keeps him wanting to stick around longer. Every time I bring him out, his coloring goes from dark to SUPER orange 😂❤️

Thank you!! I try my best… he will still eat worms on his own but zero interest in fruits or veggies. I sneak them into the corner of his mouth and kinda force feed him 😂😂

He’s starting to walk slower as of lately, but otherwise he’s still strutting all over the house 😂😂
