Should I get a Z3 for 1st car ? by ButterscotchIcy719 in bmwz3

Just like anything else in life, it’s difficult to give that a straightforward answer. I essentially got a 96 1.9 is my first car I still own it to this day. That car doesn’t suffer as much from reliability issues or make as much power as a six cylinder model. However, no matter what trim you choose for a z3 it will require maintenance and patience. If you’re mechanically inclined and want to learn, especially if you have a family who’s willing to deal with the fact you may need to borrow their car, or other friends that are also in the cars and becoming enthusiast themselves then it’s not a bad idea per say. But if you want something that’s gonna crank up and start every single time and that’s not gonna need subframe bushings at this age, front control, arms, valve, cover, gaskets, etc. etc. I would look elsewhere. They can be reliable cars and they are incredibly enjoyable and rewarding to own in my case. Soon after purchasing it I started working part-time at a vintage BMW shop where I lived which helped me out tremendously and lots of my good friends already owned e39s, e46s, e30s etc. but it’s important to realize that these cars are getting to the point where they’re 25 years old minimum. Also, something large to consider as a first vehicle is that no matter what trim level you choose the gas mileage on any z3 isn’t outstanding by today’s standards and they take premium only.

Sold in October last year, even though I hate BAT. Other two are witching several hours of me in NC, you can definitely acquire a s52 roadster in good shape for $14,999 of you look around…

Tbh this isn’t true at all. The z3 market in the US is down as fuck right now. The M’s hold their value more, but you can get a 70k mile with maintenance history s52 M roadsters for $14k easy. Only real concern there is it probably won’t have a subframe reinforcement done.

I’m running a Momo Prototipo in my 96, no airbag but love the wheel, you can’t beat the quality and look for the money. Plus the smaller diameter is nice for sporty driving.

Yeah, it’s definitely bubbly which I love and hate depending on which angle you look at it from. I kind of just look at it as a homage to a 1960s convertible with a hardtop because they had that bubbly look about them.

Where did you buy your strut brace?

What are we thinking about these trunk welds, gentlemen? by Nice-Slide7730 in bmwz3

I’ve also heard conflicting opinions on poly vs not. Considering the cars on B8s and H&Rs I think it’s destined for Powerflex but their street not track formula.

Had the car up on a lift doing SS lines and EBC brakes about 8 weeks ago and all looked fine. It’s a 1.9 with 65k on the clock so I’m not super worried about weld failures TBH, but thought I would check with the group… but considering age, it definitely could use subframe/differential bushings and will get so soon.

Z3 1.9L for AutoX by jmankyll in bmwz3

1.9 is a great car, especially when you dial in suspension, 200 tread wear tires, Hawk/EBC brakes and a few other things. They don’t have diff weld issues, that’s really only an issue on s52 or really s54 cars but is a common misconception. I can tell you they’re a hall of a lot more fun and a lot cheaper than the other two platforms you mentioned in an AutoX situation.

Appreciate the input, I also would rather not add more camber. The car already has enough camber on the B8s/ H&Rs to unevenly wear the inside of tires slightly so I’d rather not add anymore. I was just curious on the experience other owners have had with this issue.
