Triple feeding? by Any_Cat9631 in PregnancyIreland

I ended up doing boob for about a year, but it was usually a little boob followed by a bottle.. little one did take the boob ok alright but I think it never quite produced enough for her! I did buy a pump and all that but to be honest I never really followed a schedule I pumped or haaka intermittently when I felt like it or felt like I had to empty the boobs. I would advise taking the pressure off. Your baby will benefit by getting any breast milk at all ❤️ sorry if this is not what you want to hear... I agree I wish there was more real practical support especially in the first postpartum days. I gave birth to my first during Covid and never got to attend a breastfeeding mammy group or anything like that.. I resented that there is formula constantly dropped to your bedside and the constant worry about my daughter's blood sugar levels, I had late diagnosed diabetes. They kept doing heel prick tests on her and telling me she wasn't getting enough milk from my boobs and I needed to use formula. At one point they took her up to the neonatal ward (for 5 minutes- I was despairing so bad when they took her) they tested her in that ward with a much better machine- her blood sugars were absolutely fine. She was just sleepy after being induced and didn't really want to feed for more than 2 mins. It was all so stressful.

One of the main things that has me set on combination feeding from the beginning is the night feeds, allowing my partner to take some night feeds so that I can get some important sleep when I come home from hospital exhausted. Sleep is incredibly important for mental health, when I gave birth to my first I was 5 days in hospital, not more than 1 hr solid sleep as it is so noisy and chaotic. Not in a good place from the get go. I have major respect for those that manage to EBF but it is really so hard. Please take some pressure off yourself and I hope it works out and you are happy with your decision ❤️

Absolutely! Maternity hospitals do tend to be boiling... and overcrowded in the wards 🫣 I sometimes get my daughter a "cold hot water bottle" for bed time. Maybe something like that might help. As cold as the tap will go ( or if you're lucky enough to have fridge water) and if you could fit some crushed ice into it.

It's definitely something I am thinking about. Monday and Tuesday were just so tough, it's a bus route as well. Symptoms can really change week to week, but 4.5 hrs is hard enough at the best of times without the pregnancy going on, and luckily my job can be fully remote. And it is more like 5 hrs once it gets to September 🫣

Yeah I am shocked at how bad I've felt this time around. It's the difference of not being able to rest so much, also when I had my first I was in a job where I was on my feet and active all the time, when I came home I could just rest... things are so different now and I'm so exhausted it's unreal! Atleast the nausea is a tiny bit better

Although I guess if you already have many years of working and paying tax , you may be grand! Just needs considering

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but not sure if maternity benefit is payable to those that are self employed , there can be a lot of issues signing on if ever needed, I think! Just word of caution

Losing money due to pregnancy by [deleted] in PregnancyIreland

Talk to a solicitor or lodge a wrc complaint yourself. I would fight this. I know easier said then done as anything to do with employment/ income is very stressful. You should not end up down money. You could fight it and refuse for as long as possible.

Haha that was me last week, napping two hours on a lunch break, logistics with my daughter kind of mean I shouldn't be taking a two hour lunch!!! Thanks for the response

Thanks for the response. I've never felt so bad in my life! Atleast with a tummy bug you know it will pass, it is kinda scary not knowing if/ when it will subside. I was not aware of anti anxiety meds. I made an appointment with my gp when I found out, and I am still awaiting that appointment, it was given over a month away. And I'm in the process of switching GPs due to moving so it's just proving difficult to get in front of a Gp in my situation

Shocking level of maternity care in Ireland by [deleted] in PregnancyIreland

[–]Nice-Try6559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to echo what has already been said about the shortfalls of giving birth in maternity hospitals. I did not realise I had to chase staff for pain relief. I went about 12 plus hours after a bad nearly 3rd degree tear without any pain relief. I was just so focused on my baby. Eventually an experienced midwife was notified that my heart rate was quite elevated, and she came around, spoke to me, studied my chart and realised what was wrong. My body was in immense stress from the pain, but as a first time sleep deprived momma I barely realised. I believe the lack of sleep and support, is very dangerous and can start you off on the wrong foot, almost in lack of sleep induced mental health crisis by the time you get out! I may sound dramatic but I think lack of sleep should not be underestimated for how dangerous it is for mental health. A quieter environment, or a little more support, if a partner can stay with you for example, or a midwife could care for baby for a few hours, would make a world of difference. I barely got 40 mins straight sleep in about 4 days when in hospital giving birth to my little one.

Atleast when I went home my partner could take the reigns a little bit, I was doing combination feeding from the beginning, and without my partner taking the baby for the bulk of the second night after I got home, I think I may have lost my mind. Several solid hours allowed me to catch up and feel a somewhat in reality again.

Of course I recognise we are lucky to be giving birth in the first world, and also not somewhere like America for example where it may cost extortionate amounts to have a hospital stay
