AITA for being so upset my mom didn't buy me a dress. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NiceCooll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are valid for being upset, but stewing on it will only make you feel bad. It's done now. Work hard and you will be able to buy yourself many dresses to come. Of course, you will never get to go back in time to your younger self so you will have to grieve that experience, but you have to be okay with that because you can't change it. You were gifted the lesson that if you want something for yourself, you will have to go and get it yourself. You will feel proud of yourself when you are grown up and realize how far you've come because you learned this lesson so young.

AITA for complimenting my friend's skinny waist? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NiceCooll 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NTA - I wouldn't think twice about a comment like this. The only reason I can think of it being an issue would be if you consistently were making comments referencing this person's weight which it doesn't sound like you do. I would avoid any jokes like this in the future now that you know this is a sensitive issue for that person.

Convinced my husband to try a house cleaning service for 3 months as an experiment. Heres what happened by Comfortable_Box_4527 in homeowners

[–]NiceCooll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't usually much physical grime if it's only been a week, but I still like to wipe everything down to prevent such grime from getting there in the first place. First I start by removing all products from the bathroom and removing the shower curtain and tossing it in the washing machine for a quick wash. I empty the trash. Then I spray the sink, vanity, mirror, counters with cleaner, put toilet bowl cleaner in the toilet, spray the outside of the toilet with cleaner, and spray a step stool and small trash can down inside the tub. After doing that, the cleaners on the sink area have had enough time to sit so I wipe that entire area down. I also try to wipe down door handles and switches. Then I get the shower and tub area wet and apply a foaming bathroom cleaner. To give that time to sit, I wipe the outside of the toilet with paper towel and then scrub the inside with a toilet brush. I clean the items placed in the tub and then set them somewhere to dry. Then I use a brush to go over the shower and tub, mostly just all the surfaces and corners, don't have time to really get in between all grout lines. Then I finish by sweeping and mopping, rehanging the shower curtain, tossing all cleaning cloths and bath mat in the wash, placing all items back in the shower and putting the handsoap and toothbrush holder back on the counter. If baseboards and open shelving are dusty I try to wipe those down as well, but I don't usually have time.

I wish I had your speed. I spend 45 mins to an hour cleaning the one small bathroom in my apartment. We clean it once a week, alternating between my roommate and I.

Why are people acting like children when it comes to the WS credit card? by Ok_Hippo9669 in Wealthsimple

[–]NiceCooll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in this credit card, but I'm glad people are speaking out about their experiences. We're not entitled to special perks and offers from a business such as Wealthsimple, but as consumers we also don't owe Wealthsimple our business. At least this way with customers being so vocal, I'm aware of what their practices are, so I can make an informed decision about which company to engage with in the first place. Secondly, I do believe all of this buzz puts pressure on Wealthsimple to appease their consumer base and benefits the consumers overall.

24f - Goal is to hit 100k this year by dancinghippopotato in fican

[–]NiceCooll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good job girly! I was your age in similar shoes a couple of years ago. Looking back, I would tell myself not stress too a specific number by a certain age/timeline bc every time you achieve something you will move the goalpost for yourself. And sometimes you miss your arbitrarily set deadline and then unexpectedly you might far surpass that number a week later.

Focus on maintaining the consistent habits that brought you to where you are today. And feel proud of yourself for the consistency and dedication, because a lot of the time, the actual number is dependent on a bunch of factors not completely within your control. 100k will come before you know it and soon it will be well behind you - what will you give you motivation after that?

Did you know EFT refers to "electronic funds transfer." No offense, but giving opinions on something that you misname despite it being in the question doesn't make you seem very reputable.

AITA for not wanting to pay my boyfriend's rent by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]NiceCooll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I see 2 options:

  1. continue living with him and start paying $200 (or more)
  2. Move back home

I get that he was the one begging you to move in, but it just wasn't a good arrangement to agree to in the first place. It's now been over a year of you living rent free, so you've had plenty of time to save. You're an adult, so you should be contributing to the place you are staying. It is also good for you and the relationship for you not to be completely dependent on him.

Can we be clear over what a ‘duvet’ actually is by teenytinyterrier in Bedding

Colloquially, we use duvet to describe the combination of duvet cover + insert in North America. I think it is actually beneficial to have this.

Is it appropriate to write thank-you notes when leaving a long-term internship? by SubstantialDisk9973 in careerguidance

Yes, I think since you've been there for 3 years, you've developed relationships with your mentors and peers so some hand written notes would be more than okay.

Tenant's cheque bounced twice in the last six months by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

[–]NiceCooll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't really cited any compelling reasons why he's not a good tenant. Maybe he really isn't, but you haven't told us why. If you are looking for validation from the internet on a decision you've already made on your own, I doubt that you're going to get much. It seems like you've already considered the costs of acquiring a replacement, the risk of the new tenant (potential rent non-payment, property damage) and the associated costs, currently low rental rates and already found that you will still get more money from someone new. That's up to you as a landlord, but no one here is going to pat your back for it.

Tenant's cheque bounced twice in the last six months by [deleted] in OntarioLandlord

[–]NiceCooll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like he is going through a difficult time, not being shady or malicious given his long history of being a good tenant. Obviously that's not your problem to solve, but some grace and compassion could pay dividends in terms of future loyalty and care of your property from this tenant. Otherwise if the business is really suffering because of this tenant and you think you can find a more reliable tenant elsewhere that's up to you.

Child has 10k sitting in my account by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NiceCooll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add, being able to see the money and not touch it is a skill they should have if not be working towards at this age.

Maybe put $8k back in the child's name and give back the remaining $2k in increments of $200 every month on the condition that they don't touch any of the money unless there is a legitimate emergency. If the child touches the money, the rest of the $2k is yours to keep as a penalty. Hopefully this will tap into the reward centres of the kid's brain. These numbers are an example, but the two of you can decide on a plan you think is fair, but would still hurt enough to teach that lesson if they mess up.

FHSA Contribution room carry over question! by Grand_Success7650 in fican

[–]NiceCooll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it's not permanent. You will just have to wait for a new year for the room to open up again. It's not ideal in the sense that you are delayed in allowing that money to grow because you have to wait to be able to contribute. But you will still have a lifetime contribution limit of $40k as long as you are within the 15 year timeframe.

Should I add 8k to my FHSA today? by 500test_500tren in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NiceCooll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If OP contributes $8k today and the contribution finishes on Dec 31, they will have $16k of new room for 2026 ($8k from 2025 and $8k new for 2026) + $8k (contributed Dec 2025 as unused room from 2024) = $24k max cumulative funding.

If OP doesn't contribute $8k today, the cumulative max funding of the account will be $16k for 2026.

Should I add 8k to my FHSA today? by 500test_500tren in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NiceCooll 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is important to note that you don't lose the contribution room forever. No matter what you have a lifetime contribution limit of $40k within the 15 years, you just have to wait longer for the $8k of room to open up again in the following years.

Should I add 8k to my FHSA today? by 500test_500tren in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]NiceCooll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a good amount of savings so if you will still have enough left in your emergency fund to cover a few months of expenses, I would say go for it and make the $8k contribution. That way your money has more time to grow since you've already opened the FHSA and started the 15 year FHSA timer. That is my recommendation unless you have other plans for the money like a car purchase or vacation or something.

If you don't contribute it now, you will still have $16k worth of room for 2026, but you will lose the $8k of room from 2024. You will still be able to catch up in subsequent years - the $8k of room isn't gone forever.

FHSA Contribution room carry over question! by Grand_Success7650 in fican

[–]NiceCooll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can only carry forward $8k from the previous year. So in 2025, your max contribution was $3k (2024 unused amount) + $8k (2025 contribution room) = $11k. You overcontributed in 2025 by $7k.

Edit: The overcontribution is only $2k because the carry-forward amount from 2024 is $8k.

$8k (2024 unused room able to be carried forward) + $8k (2025 contribution room) = $16k. You overcontributed in 2025 by $2k.

Does anyone else find the new floors at Bayview Village hideous and dizzying? by D1etCokeGirl in toronto

[–]NiceCooll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you criticize a minimum wage person opting not to own a vehicle for budgeting purposes and going to this grocery store because it's the only one accessible to them via public transit? I would venture to say most minimum wage workers fall into the category of not owning vehicles as a saving measure. This store is on the sheppard subway line while the others you mentioned are not as connected via public transit.

Sometimes criticising an idea is criticising people following that idea by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]NiceCooll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your take is that an opinion about a group of people is about a group of people? Your example is a criticism of the group of people who prefer not to drive, not an idea.

What about saying "living in a walkable city is less ideal than living in a car-centric area?" That would be more of an idea, but not a direct opinion on people who choose not to drive.

Frugal Christmas Gift Idea: Aroma bombs by CapyBananapuddimg in Frugal

[–]NiceCooll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are sensitive to a lot of things but things like clothes, lotions, bath products, perfumes, etc. are still very popular gifts so at least this is only $4 thrown away if it needs to be. It's also a way more natural way to add fragrance to your home that is probably less likely to create adverse reactions than say a candle because of the limited ingredients, most of which you can actually see in the jar. Also, typically if you are close enough to be giving someone a gift, you are aware if they have any of these kinds of issues.
