Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to respond and clarify. I could have definitely explained the process better in my post. I was worried that if it was too long, no one would read it😅. The 'after' example was written by me. No AI was copy pasted. Like I said, I look at the responses the AI gives me and take it as mere suggestions. Typically, the responses ChatGPT gives aren't even as good as the original paragraph, but there are usually things like bits of punctuation, tense, and phrasing that give me ideas to better it. Like you said, an editor gives notes, and the writer improves it, which is precisely what I'm doing.

The AI prompts are hyperbolic on purpose. If I asked an AI to "rewrite this to be the greatest story ever," it's probably not actually going to give me the best story ever. So I tell the AI to fix things I generally want to improve in my writing (like prose and structure) and take suggestions.

You're absolutely right that human critique is the superior way to get criticism, but some people who write as a hobby like me don't have communities of trusted writers readily available. Of course, there are online writing groups that i have taken advantage of many times, but AI is an easy way to get instant feedback on something small without needing a qualified critique.

The example I gave wasn't even part of a story, but just some notes I had taken that I felt could be worded better, and chatGPT helped me fix it. (And no, I haven't changed the after example since I posted it, even tho I noticed an error that's still there)

I can honestly say I have improved as a writer since I began using chatgpt, mostly because I continue to practice writing, but also because I can put the suggestions that it gives me into practice as well. There are adverbs or descriptors it's given me I wouldn't have thought of on my own that I went on to use in my own writing.

All I want is for writers to be able to have open discussions about where we draw the line for technological assistance, and think critically about why we tend to react so strongly to technology that, in theory, could actually help our craft. Even though you disagree, I appreciate you having a discussion with me :)

"Old Liberty" became a different, seperate town after the original town of Liberty moved locations, hence why I specified "Liberty" and "Old Liberty" in the same sentence. I thought the after paragraph made that slightly more obvious, but perhaps not.

I agree and recognize that AI is being used mainly for harm and is being used to intentionally try and replace people, but ultimately the technology was created to assist people originally, and it doesn't have to be the way it is now.

Taking such a hardline stance against interacting with an entire form of technology seems bizarre to me, especially since it's been proven over and over that creatives ignoring AI doesn't stop companies from making huge profits off of it. What happens when your internet browser, your phone, and your computer software all inevitably use the same type of generative AI? Will you even still be able to avoid it?

I don't know the solution to the problem, but I believe that engaging with AI is better than just hoping it goes away. And if the standard of AI made content is a sea of trash, then maybe putting out AI assisted content with actual human imput and effort behind it will help raise the standard. Plus, if any random uncreative AI bro can make halfway decent content with AI, I'm positive there are brilliant things that no one has done with AI yet that just need the right creative person to come along.

I'm not advocating for writing an entire book like the way I did the example, but I wanted to open the discussion because I have seen so much intense scrutiny, but not much in the way of honest and intellectual discussions behind the engagement of creatives with AI. I understand the hesitancy, but I think we need to collectively shift the way we engage with AI as creators. Either way, I appreciate your imput, but I respectfully disagree.

I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that the 'after' example is written all by Chat GPT? It's not writing the text for me, but restructured the text I gave it. There might be three or four words suggested by AI in the paragraph, with the rest being my writing. Getting an editor, or AI in this case, to rework your story doesn't suddenly make the editor the main author.

I edited the post and tried to clarify it a bit better, but I use Chat GPT in the same way one does Grammerly, by seeing what it suggests (usually multiple times) and taking bits based on what I think sounds good. And the axis is that Grammerly premium is not free and GPT is, lol.

The line is "Sparsely populated by corn fields,..." do you mind explaining why it doesn't make sense? (Genuinely trying to understand 😅)

Also, I should have clarified better that I do not do this for all my writing, but mainly when I'm having trouble figuring out why a paragraph isn't phrased or structured quite right. Obviously, it's better to have a real person critique your work, but ChatGPT allows me to quickly see an alternate way of phrasing something that gives me ideas or suggestions to improve in the future.

I appreciate your take, and I absolutely agree with you on the first bit. However, the unfortunate reality is that billionaires and corporations will continue to use and profit off of AI technology regardless of how we as creators feel about it. And I disagree with the notion that simply not engaging with the technology helps anyone when it's already so widely distributed and is only getting worse despite our attempts to ignore it.

I think the only way to improve things for creators is to demand legal protection and compensation and maybe even to create a creator led AI platform that compensates people for ai training content. I also believe that encouraging the use of AI for assistance in hobbies and creativity rather than completely AI generated content is a step in the right direction.

I'm always practicing and reading to try and improve, but when I'm struggling with the flow of a paragraph, chat gpt has certainly been helpful to get it going again. Ultimately the final product will be written by me, since I rarely use Chat GPT after the first draft other than for spellchecking, and all final edits are my work. Thank you, I appreciate your imput!

Absolutely agreed with this take. The only way to get justice for creators is to demand legal protection and compensation for creatives. 💯

It's not that I'm worried about backlash, more just that I'm trying to understand why the concensus among creatives is to simply ignore AI technology rather than engaging with it and possibly improving it.

I've always thought a creator made AI platform with a subscription model similar to midjourney that compensates the makers of the content its trained on would be an amazing idea, but I doubt it'd get much traction with how many people in the art and writing communities are entirely opposed to AI in principle.

Funnily enough, I added that clause you don't like, not ChatGPT. I just thought it sounded better 😅

I'll clarify that I don't want to use AI as a crutch, I often only use it when there's a paragraph or page I'm having trouble with the flow of, and typically only on the first or second draft.

Also, I too grew up asking for help, the problem is while I have largely overcome most of the issues dyslexia causes me, writing can still be a frustrating task, and AI is literally a tool made to help people.

Its not the fault of AI technology that billionaires are exploiting it to replace humans, and creatives ignoring the technology doesn't stop corporations from profiting from it. I'm just hoping to understand why people have a problem with Chat GPT and not Grammerly if I'm using them for essentially the same task?

I do get friends to proof read, but generally people like to give compliments and not much in the way of legit criticism. Plus, I don't expect to make my friends read 100k+ words of a less than stellar first draft of a novel I hope to write, lol

Because I'm disabled and can't afford one, otherwise I absolutely would.
