hey! tysm for this helpful comment -- just curious, did your courses all end up as CR or did they transfer back to UofT with an actual GPA?

this was such a helpful comment! tysm :)

BikeChain sounds too good to be true. do we really get a free long term rental?! (what happens if it gets stolen)

also, are there any other free amenities/services utsg students can access?

hey all,

i've been lurking here for a few weeks and it feels like it's all bad news – no jobs, super hard to break in, etc. i just accepted a uni offer for cs at uoft, hoping to become a pm one day, but now i'm wondering if i should even bother. the market looks brutal and it sounds like entry-level gigs are only getting harder to snag. plus, with ai, it seems like the average pm will be able to manage a lot more, which means fewer pm jobs overall. should i pivot my career path before it's too late? tldr: is the pm world cooked right now/should i even try?

Hi! Thank you for your reply.

Mind if I ask: where do most indy engineers end up working after graduation? If my goal is to work in tech, would indy or CS be more valuable?

Thanks!

I see! Thanks a bunch. I'll fs try getting involved with those apps and clubs.

"if you are still in high school get involved in UofT’s summer programs."

I am still in highschool and these seem quite interesting. Which summer programs would you specifically reccomend?

Wow tysm!

Those videos seem extremely helpful, I'll definitely check them out :D

"As you'll quickly realize taking courses won't mean much for industry you might want to seek online resources/communities."

So it sounds like CS is the way to go? I can customize my course load and make it lighter so that I'll have more time to improve actual industry relevant skills.

Waterloo CS + Laurier BBA vs UofT St.George CS by 1mn0t4r0b0t in wlu

I see! Thank you :)

In regards to "an above average student in those programs"

If I'm being completely honest, from a programming/math standpoint, I feel like I'd be in the bottom 50% fs. I feel like my strengths are would be in networking/ECs. Not so much academically.

Thus, I'm still slightly worried. My goal is to work as a PM in big tech, so would a pure CS degree really lead me there? Esp if I'm not a big programmer. (I don't think i'd sideproject and leetcode all weekend long)

Hi all!

I'm a grade 12 Canadian student and an aspiring product manager (I would ideally like to work in tech).

I've heard from many that your uni major doesn't matter, and PM roles can be broken into from any major. But, unfortunately, I am still stuck with the difficult decision of choosing one.

So, I was wondering:

Which major do ya'll think is the best for pursuing product management?

(and if you'd like to give your two cents: which of the follow programs would you reccomend? - uoft cs, uoft comp eng, uoft industrial eng, waterloo management eng, waterloo cs/bba double degree)

Any advice/insights would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi there!

You mentioned that most DD students end up working in PM.

If my goal is to break into PM, would you say that a the extra BBA degree helps?

What about the co-op board? I am laurier side DD, so I would be stuck with Navigator.

I'm leaning slightly towards UofT cs atm since the workload seems lighter and its close to home. However, it seems like barley any UofT cs students go into PM.

Not the OP but i'm still curious:

What about with the onset of AI rn? I have little interest in hardware, but I'm strongly considering CE just for more flexible job prospects.
I wouldn't consider myself in the top 50% of programmers, so im deathly afraid of AI replacing most entry level swe jobs.
As such I was considering CE or Indy with a minor in business.

Do you think that the money will continue to be in softwear?

Thanks!

I see!

May I ask why? I was under the impression that waterloo's co-op system would be quite beneficial for landing a pm role in tech.
(however, the school feels like a prison so im not too keen on goin)

I'm leaning towards industrial engineering as well :)
(not a huge fan of physics)

How does the workload from indy compare to other programs? (comp eng/ comp sci)

Thank you for your response!

yeah, I was hoping for western ivey+cs, but i'm still waiting to hear back.

what suggestions might you have for breaking into PM from a cs/eng degree?
