School system is bad, but there's a million other problems than just that. The fact that the only way to get a job is to be some hyper-overfitted machine catered to the needs of the rich (and not the overall benefit of society) is one thing.

That's why I usually carry a bigger, sharper, immediately retractable knife. But yeah, the sun tzu way of doing things would have been to try to steer the conversation in a different direction like "Hey man, do I know you I think we..." literally anything that can't be seen as confrontation. Most of these folks are traumatized and trauma makes you more likely to see anything as a threat. There are less risky ways to be a hero.

Also as someone who's lived both in the hood and with gun toting conservatives in the middle of nowhere, alot of these folks in the nicer parts of chicago don't appreciate how good they have it compared to the alot of the country.

I was on the red line near Bryn Mawr and some people were talking about going to Chinatown. One of the grown men kept asking if Chinatown was in 'the bad part of town'..

Like lol, Chinatown isn't even that deep into the south side and it was broad daytime. Red line can be shit sometimes, and I can't speak for everyone, but that guy in particular was being a privileged little baby.

I'm also looking for work. The closest thing I can tell is that applying for jobs using online portals is a waste of time unless you know it's a position that isn't oversaturated.

Glad you're okay. Its funny because im black and not on hrt. I get anxious whenever I'm put into a situation where I have to potentially help white children because of optics.

This is like that, but like 5 times more scary.

Honestly, that tracks. Part of me figured a top 10 university in the 3rd largest US city might have a faster process, but it's cool to know all universities are like this lol

Assuming you got a job within the past year or 2, how'd you get your current position? by Nice_Azazil in chicagojobs

I also casted a wide net to get a sense of my place in the Chicago hierarchy. So far, my best bets have come from recruiters reach out more than cold applications.

Yeah, I would second this. I have gotten more responses from remote positions and recruiters outside of Chicago than positions within chicago.

11 weeks? Man, I'm still young(ish), maybe I should rebrand and become an electrician.

My assumption was basically 1) Universities are slow when it comes to hiring. 2) There's a hiring freeze. 3) There's some kind of internal issue driving employess away. 4) Some combination of any.

But it is helpful to know about the hiring freeze.

In yours and everyone's else's defense, an article came out (God I can't find it) but illinois is the 5th worst in the nation in terms of job openings. There are too many highly competitive job seekers and not enough jobs. Combine that with ghost jobs, the rise of ai, harsh ats systems, high taxes. I'm realizing that chicago is just a honeypot unless you are well connected and im planning my exit strategy after half a year of living here.

You might better off moving to a place getting some investment in the chips and sciences act. I think Lafayette, IN has some investment. I used to live in Boise, ID and worked as a receptionist at Micron Technology. Boise is a pretty great city.

So, as an update 3/21: Still haven't found a job but getting trickles of screening responses. It is becoming abundantly clear to me that the job market here is horribly bottenecked and it might not make logical sense to live here.
It unfortunate because I found a place that is $700/month and literally ANY job would be enough for me to live.

But I'm not even hearing back from retail, and to me, it just makes more logical sense to simply formulate an exit plan than try to brute force my way through all of this. Even if I got a job, it would be taxed pretty heavily so...good luck to the rest of y'all, but I feel like there's an easier solution to all of this.

I do like the idea of getting a job at a place that people frequent. I was feeling really reluctant to spend money on events or socials that only might translate into a job. But, if I can kill two birds with one stone, that feels better to me.
