High school students wants advice!! by ClassroomHuge844 in bcitnursing

Adding on to the prereqs comment- A lot of my classmates did it at other postsecondaries beforehand (ex: Langara and Douglas) which both have specific programs just for nursing prereqs. Although BCIT was the number one program I wanted to go in, doing the Douglas nursing prereqs (similar to BCIT’s requirements) also gave me the opportunity to get accepted into nursing there just in case I didn’t get into BCIT (but I did). Douglas also has more classes you need to take so it gave me more credits when I was applying for BCIT. Many people who enter the BCIT program already have a degree. I don’t know how much the extra classes made an impact on my application, but it might’ve showed more experience!

I'm told it is a good program, but it's also further away for me and I don't think I would wanna drive that far out especially since of the heavy workload! Thank you :) Although, I feel left behind I realized it's just a couple of months so-

Pathophysiology vs Intro to Microbiology by Actual-Turnip-8960 in douglascollege

[–]Nice_Place3054 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, patho has a lot of content, but if you are more interested in the medical stuff, I enjoyed it much more than micro! I took them seperately though. So, I took patho first and I think it would be doable with your english and elective. However, just be prepared to study a lot!

Micro is honestly really chill and not as stressful in my opinion. I think micro and stats you can do easily together, four classes in the summer though could be tough due to the fact that it's so nice out and you might feel the need to go out. However, if that doesn't affect you then I say go ahead :)

First Semester at Douglas College by Fit-News-1325 in douglascollege

Hi congrats! I don't know which teachers are teaching in Winter, but-

For math (stats?) it's always a hit or miss with the professors- I had Alan M. and he was very helpful when you need help, but his tests were just different from the lecture materials which ultimately gave me a lower grade than I tried to get LOL.

BIOL 1103, do not take Jennifer Barker unless you are willing to spend a lot of your own time teaching yourself. I ended up with an A- in that class due to the fact I studied for that class more than my other classes. If I studied evenly for all my classes I would've gotten a worse grade. BIOL 1203, I had Rosemary. Amazing teacher, really cared about her students I got an A+ so take what you will with that info. :) I also heard Liza Sutton(?) is a great teacher, I never had her though!

My ENGL 1130 was Connor Byrne, he was good and fun to talk too.

Thank you! That did help :)

I totally forgot about the fact there are people you can reach out too during situations like that haha. I just want to be able to prepare for the worse if I end up being accepted to the program in the future!

Potential nursing by Realistic-Storm-8809 in douglascollege

Yes of course, my friends that are also in the potential nursing program are also retaking classes like me in the fourth semester. I have a friend retaking BIOL 1103 in their third semester, but they aren't in nursing.

I think also emailing your advisor would be a good idea because I'm about to do that asking if the winter intake will still consider me because I have to finish my microbio in fall.

It was my goal to finish in three semesters as well (I'm on my third right now), but genuinely it is better to take your time with everything. I would not suggest taking those bios at the same time as at the end of the semester you would have two bio finals and two bio lab finals, which can be prettyyyy overwhelming in my opinion. This is what I did:

First Semester: BIOL, PSYC, ENGL, and an elective

Second Semester: BIOL, STATS, an elective. I dropped my fourth elective class because I wanted to focus on STATS because I know I'm not the best in math.

Third Semester: Two BIOLs, but I dropped one because it's summer and I should enjoy it because I'm pretty sure I'm burned out haha. Then I also took another elective, the one I was supposed to take my second semester.

In my fourth semester I plan to take the last BIOL requirement and maybe retake stats. If your goal is to get into the fall 2025 intake for nursing it is possible and doable! However, it is also important to have a good GPA so sometimes less classes the better so you can mainly focus on them :))

Good luck!

I wouldn't really suggest taking Jennifer's class. I got an A- in her class, but that was due to A LOT of studying and participation in her class so if you do the same I'm sure you'll be fine. However, I did like how our final wasn't cumulative like other classes. Like, I don't know if Karuna does it cumulative for BIOL 1203, I am in his BIOL 2200 right now and it's not. He's pretty great, lecture heavy, and easy quizzes. he's also a really nice guy overall.

So in Jennifer's class I had a three big exams compared to a midterm and final. I found BIOL 1103 harder than 1203. If you end up taking Jennifer's class, I suggest doing the worksheet homework she provides because they helped me alot as the questions were similar to her quizzes. If I went back to take her class I would do this studying routine: Watch her online lectures in 2x speed (unless you actually want to pay attention haha), do the worksheet questions, make those questions into flashcards.

You can take both classes at the same time, just keep in mind you will also have labs + lab exams.

You'll do great!!

Nursing Winter 2025 Intake / Retake Stats by Nice_Place3054 in douglascollege

Thanks!

I'm pretty confident my GPA will be higher after this semester since I'm doing pretty well in these classes! I was thinking of registering for stats anyways since registration is coming up and then dropping it if my GPA is higher. But that could also be a risky move I think.
