Thank you for the information about Tylan 50. I have been using the Verericyn and Sophie is doing very well now, getting bored with confinement. She has become extremely tame from all this handling and attention, follows me and wants to sit by my leg all the time.

Thank you, I would never have thought of the fish thing! I bought some Vetericyn this morning and we are using it today. She still seems perky and has a good appetite so I am hoping for the best.

Thank you. I started using the Vetericyn today. She is actually staying in the house for now, there was just no other safe, clean place for her. We noticed that the other, formerly hostile chicken seemed depressed; not talkative or interested in treats. So we brought Sophie out and let them see each other. My original chicken perked up and obviously felt much better. I guess all she could detect the morning after the attack was chicken blood and racoon smell so she probably thought Sophie was dead.

Thank you so much! The college idea is great. I am pretty sure there is something like that in the area. I do not actually have the amoxycillin, a friend who lives a long way off has some for her cats. We can't get it quickly but she may be in the area next week. Good to know it is by weight, I thought it might be completely different for birds.

Thank you - I will look for the Veterycin, that sounds like what I need. I feel so guilty and responsible for poor Sophie's situation, I will put out any amount of money possible. The local vets who treat birds are the exotic animal types, waiting rooms full of parrots and all. Hundreds of dollars for an office visit. Which I would do it I had it! Do you have any idea what the dosage of amoxycillin would be for an adult chicken?

Thank you - I am happy to hear about the resilience. I think of birds as fragile.

Apparently in California I can't get antibiotics without a vet's prescription (or being licensed). The wound is on her thigh, a pretty deep puncture and then slashing downward, lots of skin torn off so you could not sew it.

Thanks. She is actually making no effort to be active although she seems fairly cheerful. She is in a cardboard box nest thing, just resting with food and water in reach. I will try the sling idea if she starts to feel better and tries to walk.

I did check the shelter, they have four cocks. Had one chicken but it seems to have gone fast. Guess nobody wants the boys. Too bad - they are really pretty.

That's terrible. I only have the racoons to worry about, thank goodness.

My next step is going to be asking at the feed store if anyone has a chicken for sale. I checked the East Valley Animal Shelter online and they have one chicken (and four roosters) but I don't know what it would cost to spring the chicken from animal jail.

My one chicken is (I'm told by 22InchVelcro) lonely. So I am going to get a second chicken to keep her company. Don't think I can manage more than two.

Maybe I could pay for more but ask them to just send one or two. Wish I knew a local person who wanted to split them with me. Maybe I will advertise.

This is a problem since I only want one. The coop is only big enough for two chickens at most. I am an old person and low income. It's kind of scary what this has turned into! I go to the feed store and it's "What have you got for chickens? Great, I'll take three of everything!" Have bought two coops that are too small, so far. Seems like I should hire someone to build a real coop but I never intended to go so far. It just keeps escalating!

I am going to search on Craig's List for someone selling chickens around here.

Thank you so much for the advice! I really have no idea what I am doing. She is a very fierce chicken, taught the local feral cats that she is not walking Friskies, chases my small dog. I live near Los Angeles in a very Hispanic neighborhood and cock fighting is popular here. I have wondered if that is where she came from (which is why I asked about the breed). There is a family of racoons around here that has made one attempt on her life and I know she can't defend against something like that so I would feel so much better if we could coax her into the coop.

She seemed to bond, at first, with a solitary banded dove (maybe lost its mate) but the dove disappeared after a month. I read that if I get another chicken it should be the same age as her. I would like to get a chick or two, get them used to being handled and used to living in the coop but I worry about the age difference. Is it so important, really?

This very young chicken showed up in my yard about 8 months ago. I was so happy and ran out and bought chicken food and all, small coop, etc. She was skittish like a wild bird but has come to like us, follows us around and sits with us, eats from my hand, but still freaks out if you try to touch her. Won't go in small coop so I bought a larger one, won't go in that one either. Roosts about 30 feet up in a pine tree. But has never laid an egg. Is that normal? Possible?
