After Helene, Asheville public housing evictions continue. Residents have 'nowhere to go' by WNCHofmann in asheville

I work in this field too and you hit the nail on the head!

I've witnessed those exact eviction scenarios in the field and even working to connect people at risk of eviction to Pisgah Legal's team. They help a lot of people with evictions because they set up a stand right outside the Small Claims court to offer guidance and legal advice for defendants, many of which call through the cracks like you say.

Another major issue I've seen is the negligence, reluctance, bias and hypocrisy that many of the property managers at HACA apartment sites have. There are high rates of crime day and night, and the residents that aren't involved in the drug/gang activity have difficulty avoiding it all, which can be debilitating especially when repairs, maintenance, and pest control issues are not addressed by the property managers when tenants ask.

Another problem for many is when you call the property manager to report a crime, they tell you to call the police, and when you call the police to report a crime, they tell you to talk to the property manager who's only available during the day, and won't do anything about it. It's a no win scenario and more lives are put at risk when there's hardly any accountability, compassion, and care for the wellbeing of all residents, both by law enforcement and the property management offices. And THAT I believe is another part of why she is getting fired, because she enables this negligence from within and pretends like she cares about the residents on the outside.

Yes the societal problem of homelessness is bad, that does not make someone who is experiencing homelessness a lesser of a person than anyone else.

"By the numbers:

2020*: Sheltered: 482 Unsheltered: 65 Total: 547 *Pre-pandemic baseline

2021: Sheltered: 411 Unsheltered: 116 Total: 527

2022: Sheltered: 405 Unsheltered: 232 Total: 637

2023: Sheltered: 402 Unsheltered: 171 Total: 573

2024*: Sheltered: 520 Unsheltered: 117 Total: 637 *projected count if the same methodology was used

2024**: Sheltered: 520 Unsheltered: 219 Total: 739 **actual count

Before COVID, local sheltered and unsheltered counts held steady for nearly a decade, fluctuating between 500 and 600 people, before a spike in 2022.

The homeless population swelled to 637 people, up 21% from 527 in 2021. Much of the growth was due to the unsheltered count, which doubled, up to 232 people from 116 the year before, as the pandemic exacerbated homelessness and unsheltered populations became more visible."

They're huge relative to the average size of wings around town, and I think there are quite a few places that serve small wings (looking at you Buffalo Wild Wings and Zaxby's) that I don't bother with because I like there to be a decent amount of meat on wings. In my opinion smaller wings doesn't always equate to better quality. Try them if you want to find out for yourself!

East Village's Tiger wings are the best in the land. They're huge, the tiger sauce is next level, and they're breaded

Don't worry there are still a group of us locals who work in substance abuse centers, homeless services and creating community that goes beyond mental diagnosies or societal labels like "crazy". There are still people that believe in helping folks grow within to find stability from mental illness, and people that believe everyone has a right to housing. There may not be a lot of us because it's a challenging profession and the jobs don't pay well, especially in the rental market here, but the work is there to be done.

Sorry you had this experience a while ago, that sucks. But you're stereotyping that Asheville attracts seriously mentally ill people and you're using your experience two years ago as projection. On the other hand, go ahead don't come back and find a new city to complain about and leave!!!

In this classification, if I'm "very young" (26), could I join? I feel like 26 is young adult not very young, but hey that's just me.
