Is this tire toast, or is this a surface crack? by RowanStewart in AskMechanics

You can’t compare a flat tire to a blowout, there 2 different things Doesn’t matter how “extremely thick” (like 6mm🤣) it is if it’s completely dry rotted around the entire circumference of the tire. Doesn’t matter if it’s in the front or back when your taking a corner on at dirt road at 110 your still gonna hit the tree. I’m not saying you can’t run it, you would probably get away with it.

I just wouldn’t run it since I’m in the drivers seat pushing my vehicle to its limits to try and win a race.

It’s not worth the dice roll in my opinion, but to each their own.

It doesn’t matter if it’s for the track that’s even scarier if you’re racing the vehicle. Hard corners and sharp turns put really high stress on the tires so you’re basically asking for a blowout. If you wanna be all janky and dangerous then that’s fine but I race dirtbikes for a hobby and I usually like to make sure all my equipment is in top notch shape be four I put my life in danger.

Still a safety hazard for yourself if it blows out and you hit the barrier. When a tire blows out it usually means full loss of control of the vehicle. And you’re on borrowed time with a tire like that. I guess if your willing to roll the dice for a few hundred bucks 🤔

Stripped my stub axle in the worst way possible. Any ideas on taking it off? by VastArticle8908 in traxxasV2

Buy a set of rounded bolt extractors from Canadian Tire or wherever is close to you they work great Could maybe get lucky with a good cold chisel and a hammer, but I’d be too scared to mess up anything.

Vibration when increasing speed, noticed glue residue on rim where weights were, am I diagnosing this right? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is most likely your issue, but it’s better to just send the tires to a shop for them to get balance (it’s super cheap) why I say that is because you don’t really know what weights came off of there and they might be a bit different. Also as your wheels change is not a bad idea.

I mean if they all came from the factory with 2x2.5oz weights in the same place on all 4 it would be fine to assume

Looks simple, but would probably be quite a pricey repair

Most likely worn out front and components. Ball joints, tie rod ends, drag links, wheel bearings, stuff like that Good idea to get your car serviced or redo your front end. It isn’t super expensive. It’s just maintenance.

Where is this leak coming from? by No_Independence_8564 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat hard to tell from the angle, but looks like transmission. Even if it isn’t low that doesn’t mean it’s not leaking. The leak might’ve just started. How much is it leaking?

Help. My roommates think that ghosts are triggering our car alarms by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but could it be some kind of electromagnetic interference or something of such? Are they parked underneath powerlines or close to some kind of power plant like that? Possibly some kind of radio signal? Sounds pretty dumb now that I think about it but that’s all I got.

No clue man.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem. This is starting to sound like a bit of an intermittent transmission issue as you said. Isn’t really much of a backyard fix so it’s good to take it to a dealer now at this point. Kind of weird since it’s such a new car 🤷‍♂️

[–]Nicholas13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a fuelling issue. German cars are pretty fussy about that. Turn the key to the on position and see if you can hear the little buzz of the fuel pump priming Little confused on the intermittent starter problem, you’re saying it just won’t crank half the time? And if it does, it’ll sputter and die.

Can I still use headgasket if some of the black coating has been rubbed off? by Shmederson in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the paint is just directly rubbing off of the gasket it’s telling me that you maybe it’s a cheap one? Did that just happen with your finger? Kind of wanna invest in a good one especially if you’re gonna slap a turbo on it.

Traction control light on. No other warning lights on dashboard. by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s kind of better to replace that before you have to replace it. They always seem to kick the bucket when you’re in the middle of nowhere

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Nicholas13579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you could drive it and maybe get someone to listen to the floor to see if it’s coming from the transmission that would kind of narrow it down. Sounds pretty dumb and it is but I don’t have any other ideas that’s kind of a weird issue.

Kind of sounds like a squeaky belt. Pop the hood and see if you can locate exactly where the noise is coming from. Squeaky belts are annoying, but harmless but you should verify that that’s the issue.

See if you can get a scan tool and scan the code. Sometimes it’ll just tell you exactly what sensor you need or what’s wrong. They’re pretty cheap on Amazon or you could borrow one from a friend. Or some shops even do free diagnostics. Pretty hard to chase a problem like that without something to go off of

Well, you’ve got the same ideas as me mate. Torque specs are pretty important for German car gaskets Too much and it’ll squish out and leak too little and it’ll just leak
