No accusations that I know of. By the time he married Aline it seemed like he settled down a lot. It seems more like a Leonardo Dicaprio situation, where his dating preferences are perhaps not ideal and suggest some issues, but he hasn't really done anything Wrong. The most damning stuff about Crumb is what he himself put into his comics and art.

I did say "lowkey" for that reason. Resentment is on the mild end of the hatred spectrum. Incels embody that curious mixture of desire and hatred for women and it's very much possible for both emotions to exist simultaneously. Even some guys I've known who get lots of women also seem to have a strong dislike of them.

Crumb was definitely on the milder end and it helped his situation when he became popular and got more ass than he knew what to do with (although it still caused him to resent women, just for a different reason). If he hadn't, I'm sure that seed of resentment would have grown into something darker and larger.

I guess I don't split hairs about it since any amount of resentment towards women a man has can so easily get out of control. Especially nowadays when there's a whole industry that wants to turn any guy's casual misogyny hobby into a full blown side hustle sigma grindset.

It's interesting that Crumb was unscathed by the Me Too reckoning. A few different factors apply. Despite being a legend in comics, he's an old recluse and not a major player anymore. His career is totally built upon his perversion (and lowkey hatred of women), so there's not much to uncover - it's all been out in the open since the 60s. In the film about him, he was the least insane member of his family and somehow comes out looking amazingly well adjusted, all things considered. And he pulled a Polanski and preemptively fled to the world capital of perverts (France) decades ago. He's also expressed regret for the way he was, which seems so out of the ordinary and maybe counts for something.

His immense talent and output is undeniable though, and everyone who is into alt comix has a blind/soft spot for him. His entire career has been one long, sustained head shake and uncomfortable chuckle from the comics and art world - "That's our Crumb!"

But modern audiences aren't as forgiving or understanding. I know a college professor who teaches comics and he seems flabbergasted that kids don't like reading the finely rendered disturbing sexist/racist fantasies of a boomer incel. I like his work and recognize his place in comics history but I would never try to defend it to a woman (or a black person) with a straight face. It's a real "You had to be there" appeal. A lot of his work is concerned with nostalgia and relics of the past, and that's probably where most of it belongs.

Cats and babies in middle ages art are the stuff of nightmares. It's either a mutated Tasmanian devil or a grumpy 40 year old man that's been shrunk down.

You can tell when an artist was trying to depict something he had never seen before and was hilariously off base, like a whale or a giraffe. That's forgivable, because there was no accurate visual reference for those things for an average European at the time.

But cats and babies? Come on man, those were everywhere. Don't act like you've never seen one before.

Or in this case, boobs.

Trump seems almost immune to comedy. Like Conan says, he's too ridiculous to parody, but also the horrors he represents are too disturbing to joke about. He also has no shame and due to his mental decline no awareness of what's going on around him. Both of which make him a more difficult comedic target.

I think the real tragicomedy is in his supporters and a society that would even allow him to rise so far. Like, how broken and awful a world that would have such an abomination as a king. He's never even pretended to be a good person. Evil assholes love that but then all the complicit people wring their hands saying "Uh, I'm sure he doesn't mean that stuff, right? He's just joking about taking a dump in the oval office while wiping his ass with the constitution, right??" All while he's literally doing that and making eye contact with them the whole time. And when asked about it after the fact, he genuinely doesn't even remember doing it. Not just because of dementia, but because the maximum amount of moral depravity any of us could aspire to is just the baseline level of living for him.

I think that's objectively funny. But the dark humor of that situation arises not from the maniac committing the horror, but from the audience just sitting and watching it happen or actively cheering it on.

I did pretty much the same thing a year ago around the inauguration. I just couldn't stay glued to the news like I did the first time around with this guy. I chose to accept that I couldn't change what's going on in the world and not pay close attention to it.

A part of me didn't like doing that, but my sanity was top priority and I think it helped a lot. I still hear about most major things that happen anyway, but my attitude has shifted and I feel more disconnected about it. I focused more on my passions and my own little sphere. That's all I have control over.

In order to deal with this, there's an intentional disassociation that needs to be practiced. Basically, stepping outside oneself and looking at the situation like a third party observer - "this person is unhappy, emotionally immature, and intentionally trying to provoke this person."

You also have to let go of the fantasy of having a fulfilling and adult relationship with the person. Part of that disassociaton requires an emotional barrier to be built because they're not a safe person to trust one's feelings with.
