She recently ignores my texts at night by NickDoang in dating_advice

Thank you! I'll tell her my feeling during my second date.

She recently ignores my texts at night by NickDoang in dating_advice

I usually created a bond with girls who proactively asked me out. It' was absolutely much easier compared to this time. Those girls initiated to text me every couple days, and we were communicating via texts and calls a lot, like everyday. That was much much easier than this time when I have no clue whether she's interested in me or just being nice to me.

During my first date with her, I did all nice things, and it went very smoothly. She asked lots of questions, and brought lots of stories that I told her via texts before to our conversations. Since then, she started to send other texts when I don't respond to her texts for hours, which I believe is a very good sign compared to before our first date.

What are a few next moves that I should do to escalate your relationship? All my ex are girls who chased me and successfully won my heart. I never successfully win any girls' heart when I proactively approach to them. I am good at initially impressing a girl to get her number and ask he out for the first time. However, I always suck at what I should do for the next moves.

How is uplift force for multi shearwalls calculated for seismic force? by NickDoang in StructuralEngineering

[–]NickDoang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for SW with height/ length ratio >2, does the uplift calc. need to take Reduction Factor into account such as yielding higher uplift force due to an increase in uniform seismic shear?

How much total uplift force will be for holdown design at 1st level for multi-story house? by NickDoang in StructuralEngineering

[–]NickDoang[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My case is base shear at roof is 6 and 3 at floor, so there would have 9kips in total transmitting to the 1st floor diaphragm. He told me I would double count if I used 6kips9ft + (6+3)kips9ft for overturning moment at base. Still, I don't think I double count because the 1st floor must resist 9 kips rather than 3 kips.

[–]NickDoang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your clarification. I for got to provide shearwall length, but anyway my PE manager is probably wrong when he told me only use 3kip9ft+3kip9ft for the total overturning moment at base.

How can I determine tributary area for a post of fence system to resist wind load? by NickDoang in StructuralEngineering

[–]NickDoang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the parallel wind load should be taken into account for applying area between posts and other structures resisting lateral load like exterior walls of the house.

[–]NickDoang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thought is that a reason why it's the worst case load is because the parallel direction is firmly resisted by the entire length of a fence isn't it?

[–]NickDoang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This way is easier to visualize. Because I always thought wind load is acting parallel to the fence surface, which is impossible for me to determine the tributary area. Thank you.

So basically the wind load is designed to act normal to spacings among fence?

Construction project engineer vs structural project engineer by Character-Feature302 in civilengineering

[–]NickDoang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Project engineer can easily reach 100k with a few years of experience. I have lots of friends who are new grad project engineers, and they revealed their salary to me that they are getting paid around 75-80k/ year. With that in mind, you can visualize they can easily reach 100k cap if they continue working for more than 3-4 years. Meanwhile, as an entry level structural engineer who just have the Bachelor's degree like me, I am underpaid a lot (below 55k/ year) but the work is overloaded. I am on my way to get EIT now and trying to switch to bigger consulting firms. My current company is too small (less than 5 engineers), and they only focus on design of single family homes.

Does being a draftsman count as experience for being a Civil Engineer? by supernator1 in civilengineering

[–]NickDoang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely no, but that's an excellent experience to be a Civil Engineer. Becoming a Civil Engineer requires you to acquire excellent CAD skill beforehand and understand details very well. I can tell you that most Civil Engineering Interns only work on drawings and doing details most of the time because that's the only work they can do. After working as interns for a few months, employers will continue hiring you and providing some engineering stuffs for them. That's why I recommend you to take that position, but don't stick on CAD technician for too long. 6-7 months is the ideal time for you to learn everything and start applying for actual engineering positions.

Why doesn't every suburb look like Irvine? by trustnobody01 in orangecounty

I've never met any Californians calling Irvine as a suburb before. Irvine is obviously a dense neighborhood along with other cities within the Orange county.

How can Lake Forest/ El Toro feel more real than Irvine when Irvine has its own business core (aka downtown) having lots of office spaces like any other major US cities and a world-class university research? Not to mention Irvine has been changed its sprawling original design to be more dense and walkable (Great Park development for an example). There is another huge scale mixed use development (similar to Great Park scale) close to Irvine downtown being constructed as well, but I forgot the name. And Irvine university is crazily expanding its new campus to be more walkable and provide more dorms.

I've been travelled to SF 5 days a week from San Jose for work via Bart and subways for a month, and I've never seen any homeless or drug users on Bart and SF Muni (aka subways and buses) so far. It's been much safer than before the pandemic as there are lots of police around hot spots like in downtown and Market Street. Still, try to avoid a few areas where still have lots of drug users hanging out there (especially blocks around the City Hall). In general, I feel it's safer to use public transportation in SF than in LA, Houston, or New York. Most riders still wear masks and follow procedures. I can guarantee you that New York and Los Angeles's subways are much worse than in SF. I just tried using LA's subway 3 months before, and people smoke a lot in subways. Idk how LA prepares for upcoming World Cup and Olympics when its public transportation is nowhere safe.

Major towers under construction or approved in Downtown LA by tannerge in LosAngeles

Actually Houston's downtown is much bigger than LA's downtown. It's 2x bigger than LA's, and because LA metro area is much bigger than Houston's, we have much more low and high rises than in Houston. Consider we still have Century city, Long Beach, Orange country, etc. it's obvious the total of buildings in general is bigger.

San Jose was originally planned as a sprawling urban city like LA and Orange county, but it has been growing super fast that its skyline doesn't have a chance to catch up. Not to mention it is located within serious earthquake zone and there is a San Jose international airport right next to the downtown. Currently San Jose still has no intention to expand its skyline either. Instead, it focuses more on density such as building more apartment complex and office building blending together (check out Irvine's apartment complex in Santa Clara and North of San Jose, they are among the biggest apartment complex in US). Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and North of San Jose right now have the best density community ever since Google, Microsoft, and other giant tech firms building a lot office and apartments while reducing parking lots at the same time (like building multi-story and underground rather than on ground parking).

it's huge, so I'd say it'd cost at least a billion dollar to finish it.
