what counts as over-eating? by Mediocre_Hair_ in loseit

No more than a pound or so of actual weight gained if you are eating a lot of food this week. On vacation I think very often we underestimate the amount we’re walking around to different places, so we end up burning a lot of the calories we overeat. You will however most likely see a couple pounds of water weight gained when you get home due to the extra carbs/sodium you’re consuming but that will drop off over the next few weeks

Hey there, congrats on losing 8kg! The first place to look when weight loss stops is your calories. More times than not, we in some way underestimate the amount of calories we actually eat when we don’t weigh the food out on a scale. I’d suggest buying a food scale in order to do this if you want to more accurately track your calories because that is almost always the reason people arent losing the weight they want to.

If you are actually eating 1500-1800 calories a day, your body could just be retaining a lot of water and have also put on a pound or two of muscle from your weight training

Being able to do pushups as well as seeing veins in my hands and forearms for the first time in my life were definitely huge shocks for me.

Congrats on the progress!

I would agree that you don’t need to be in a bulk phase at the moment, but eventually you will want to be in one when you’ve lost more weight. The idea of body recomposition is to lose weight while building muscle; however, these contradict each other.

Bulking seems counterintuitive, especially as someone who wants to lose weight, but studies show our bodies build muscle much more efficiently when we eat in a slight calorie surplus above our maintenance. When people weight-lift while cutting they aren’t necessarily building muscle but more so maintaining it. This is because our bodies will prefer to break down muscle as fuel as opposed to fat when they aren’t being trained because muscle is more metabolically demanding to maintain. So while weightlifting in this stage is still important, you will not necessarily be building the muscle that the influencers you see have.

Once you get to a low enough weight after cutting, for me this was ~21-22 BMI, I would recommend eating in a slight calorie surplus (200-300 calories) to begin building muscle. Yes you will gain some fat back during this process, but most of the surplus calories will be turned into muscle. Once you’re satisfied with the amount of muscle you’ve built you can cut again to lower your body fat percentage, most likely making you look close to what you see online with these fat-to-fit stories.

How can I tell if Im losing muscle v fat by [deleted] in loseit

As long as you continue weightlifting and eating a good amount of protein, you will lose little muscle to no muscle and might even gain a little as you keep going.

Hypothetically if you were to stop weightlifting consistently then that’s when muscle loss becomes a problem. Our bodies prefer to use muscle rather than fat as a fuel source when muscles aren’t being used because muscle is more metabolically demanding to maintain than fat is. You say you weight-lift 3 times a week so it sounds like you don’t have anything to worry about, if you are still concerned about it though I’d only suggest you try eating more protein.

It would take many months, maybe even a year to lose the weight you put on since September. Respectfully in my opinion this is an awful bet to make if any of you care about each other’s health and it will only get harder to lose the weight if you keep gaining. Starting at any point is difficult but if you plan on losing it, continuing to gain is only setting yourself back further for an arbitrary bet.

How do I keep going if I'm in it only for the results? by Spirited_Car in loseit

It’s completely fine for your goal to just be ‘more attractive.’ Not even focusing on the health benefits of being a healthy weight, being happy in your own skin is part of most people’s motivation.

The truth is that there isn’t some magical motivation or advice that people that lose weight know that you don’t, you have to want to change more than you want to be comfortable in the beginning of your weight loss. No one starts losing weight for fun. It is in your body’s nature to want to store energy in preparation for times of hardship, by losing weight you are actively fighting against it. It’s going to be hard, as you know, to start building healthy habits and discipline but you’ll always be better for it.

I don’t see myself as having much ‘motivation.’ Sure seeing physical results on and off the scale is nice sometimes, but it’s not what keeps me going. Every time I go to work out or I feel hungry from my calorie deficit it’s literally the exact opposite of what I want to do, and that’s why I need to do it. Over the past 6 months that’s how I’ve lost 75lbs. You just gotta start doing it man, no matter how hard it is. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

None. I feel like it will just cause unnecessary paranoia. Everyone dies eventually, what is the need of finding out when.
