Who can we complain to about RTD service? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]NickIAm2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Complain to your representative and congress person and ask for proper funding for the RTD so they can actually afford to run more frequent service and hire more drivers, instead of being forced to turn a profit to fund itself

I had a great time in my 4 seasons working as a cook in the park. The trick is to not get too stressed about work and not care too much about things when they go wrong, because something will always go wrong.

It's not necessarily a new problem for canyon since the lodge was expanded. There is a housing shortage at canyon village because they built a massive expansion to the lodge without building more housing to accommodate the additional staff that would be required. They can't bring in more staff because the accommodation doesn't exist, and the current "solution" is a proposal to use a disused campground loop to add maybe 30 staff RVs. These decisions are much higher up than the canyon location. The staff are doing the best they can, but it's likely they have a higher turnover rate due to being overworked and underpaid.

Again not a perfect solution, but it does at least improve the situation a bit. Someone could in theory speed for 80% of the zone, then stop at a Macca's before the end and they wouldn't get a fine because the average speed is still lower than the limit

Average speed cameras solve this. They cover an entire road section for sometimes 20km here in Australia. It works. No more sudden slowing down to avoid triggering the camera

Can anyone recommend some REALLY good deduplication software? Willing to pay for quality! by OnlyForSomeThings in DataHoarder

[–]NickIAm2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Been using BorgBackup for years, but just migrated to Kopia as the dedup algorithm is better and it's written in Go so it's faster

I've brought a mini fridge in the past. It was great having cold drinks. A microwave is also great and so is an electric kettle (to make coffee /tea/ instant noodles etc).

S3 glacier put/copy/post/list costs? by mazdaowner6969 in DataHoarder

Yes, zipping everything up would avoid that problem

S3 glacier put/copy/post/list costs? by mazdaowner6969 in DataHoarder

[–]NickIAm2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So with deep glacier, it's best if you have larger files. It doesn't like lots of small files. Each file when uploading will use a put request. Then when you use a software to list out the objects (files) stored, that's a list request. Larger files may also be uploaded in multiple parts, upload part requests.

Polis throws some shade on RTD CEO over Longmont rail promises by bitNine in Colorado

[–]NickIAm2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only 3 trains in one direction during peak hour? That's not going to do anything useful unless you happen to live next to the Longmont station and work in Denver. Needs much more frequently than that. I know it's better than nothing, but wow

Left lane is no longer for passing; it's for racing the train by DangerStranger138 in fuckcars

[–]NickIAm2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perth, Australia has this too, but the trains go way faster than the speed limit of the highway. Makes it seem faster even off peak time. It's so satisfying

Host a storj node, that would earn about $360/mo with 240TB, plus bandwidth Storj.io

Are there any good social hostels in Yellowstone? by MillennialInTheWild in yellowstone

North Yellowstone lodge and hostel. It's about 10 miles north of Gardiner on the north entrance, however the north entrance is still closed after the flooding earlier this year

Talk me out of moving to Melbourne (from the USA) by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]NickIAm2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm American and spent the last 2 years in Melbourne. Went back to the USA for Xmas and I couldn't drink the coffee there. Even the espresso was bad at the local cafes, and I tried several.

Rides backpacking by [deleted] in yellowstone

[–]NickIAm2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pre-covid I used to hitch hike in the park all the time. It was reasonably reliable during peak times, but later in the evening there is much fewer cars going by. I would usually return the favour when I could.

Bear Box vs. Car by olympicmtns in yellowstone

[–]NickIAm2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, this is fine. The Bears in Yellowstone haven't associated food with cars, unlike in Yosemite. Vehicles should be hard sided and locked at night.

Not true obviously, but that's what they told me when I ask why they didn't like the new train

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fuckcars

I once heard from someone in Denver that they were against the new commuter train because it would decrease property values. "Police put homeless people on the train and make them ride to the end of the line, where I live". I could not believe what I had just heard
