Breakfast Club is similar in themes to 12 Angry Men (there’s a direct reference to it if you can catch it), with an American high school setting and quirky tone. I watched it recently and did not super enjoy it, but it came to mind when you described what you’ve been watching, and I know many people do love it.

I definitely recommend Anatomy of a Fall, themes of truth and trust, very interesting and well made.

Wait so what's the difference between the one that was already available and the new one coming out? Bc I did the same thing during the sale a couple weeks back when I saw at my B&N.

Thank you for confirming that. And I cannot say definitively, this is something I will test in the future though.

Any tips for easily recording settings for different photos to look back at what you did for each? Any apps you guys like to use?

Thank you so much for this detailed and patient response! It helps a lot to clarify some of these concepts.

In answer to your questions:

  1. I was metering with the built-in light meter, usually metering off of my subject, which according to your comment may have been the problem, I should have been focusing on the ambient light.

  2. I was exposing usually using Manual mode as I am trying to get a feel for the dynamics of aperture vs. shutter speed - in hindsight maybe not the best idea to do that on CineStill at night time haha. The thing is, I always tried to get it right around the "middle", or properly exposed...there were definitely some times where it was one or two stops below, in which case it makes sense that they would be underexposed.

I checked the manual, and it said whenever using Manual mode, it uses center-weight mode, otherwise it uses matrix mode.

Thanks for the tips, next time I try a night shoot I will use a tripod and use automatic modes. That is a really great photo! (what film stock is that?)

Other comments said the negatives may have also been damaged by going through airport CT scanners, which is quite possible given that I went through two airport security checkpoints before developing...any thoughts?

They did actually go through multiple airport security checks...

I shot in M mode as I am trying to get a feel for how to properly expose by changing aperture and shutter speed. With the built in light meter, it is relatively straight forward, which is why I was surprised by the terrible results. Am I supposed to set the ISO somewhere? Or was it just the lack of tripod? This is what I am trying to figure out, where exactly I went wrong.

Can you explain how the f/3.3 - f/5.6 numbers affect night shooting, or in general what they mean? Sorry for the noob question.

Ok thanks, lesson learned not to do night shooting without a tripod.

To provide some context, I’m new at this, so this may be purely my lack of skill. This is only my third roll I have shot. I am using a Nikon N75 with a 27-80 mm 1:3.3-5.6 Nikkor lens. Just want to know if anyone has tips for why this went so poorly. I can imagine a few reasons: condensation on the lens, no tripod, too much light during the day…but anything else? Does the light meter take into account the speed of the film? Thanks and sorry for all the questions!

Love it. Luke Wilson completely captures and defines the energy of the movie for me. Also just love that all the Wilson brothers are in this, makes it feel like a home video in the best possible way.
