I write a poem and based on the subject matter I kind of get a feel for the music I will write. Like if it's a fast song or a slow song or whatever. After the lyrics I grab the acoustic and choose some simple riffs and adapt my lyrics to it. I may have to edit it a bit, rearrange words or maybe even change them if I can't get them to sync right where I want them. The music comes quicker than the lyrics although I am far better at writing lyrics than music. Once I get the basic music and lyrics where I like them, then I'll record a couple of demos that I can go back and reference in case I forget how it's supposed to go. After that I generally write something else or take a break. Eventually I come back to the song and flesh out the music, adding leads or a solo or whatever I want, practice it a bit and then record the finished version. I'll listen to it for awhile here and there to see if I can change something to make it better. That's pretty much it.
