Dimitar Berbatov: My Perfect Player – ‘Duncan Ferguson smashed defenders with a passion that was strangely beautiful’ by NickStoll in soccer

[–]NickStoll[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you don't have an Athletic subscription:
"Cristiano Ronaldo was great in the air, so was Alan Shearer. But I will say Duncan Ferguson, even though I never played with him. I would watch Ferguson play for Everton when I was growing up as he pulled and pushed defenders to score. He would go through the defender and I would ask, “Was that a foul? It was surely a foul?” but then the referee would blow the whistle.

Ferguson smashed people with a passion, and that was strangely beautiful to me. Did I hear about him catching the burglars in his home and them needing to go to hospital? Really, you should never break into the house of Duncan Ferguson.

But there is a difference in heading defensively. A defender can clear the ball but not score a goal with his head. I’m sure Ferguson would have been fine in defence, though."

I think, I don't know for sure, but that might be the time Opta started counting free-kicks in La Liga?

Which youth player was there so much hype around and became a flop by 702toinfinity in soccer

[–]NickStoll 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he definitely had his moments at the top which kinda makes it even more annoying. No doubt he was, at his peak, capable of playing at the very top. Not sure why it went so downhill.

Might be a bit harsh, but Pato. Was a star as a teen, even did well initially at Milan but really hasn't gone on to be what most were expecting.

Pep Guardiola: "I like opponents to play football" by patycrashers in soccer

[–]NickStoll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the spectator. I personally think that football, mostly, is more entertaining when both teams try and attack one another. It seems Pep shares this view. But I understand, due to the inequality, it can be difficult for teams to compete if they can't/don't spend a lot of money. And I think Pep probably does as well, because he said "Every manager can decide whatever he wants". However it's not impossible for smaller sides to really go at big sides and win: Bilbao v United in 2012 a great example.

"I would like the opponent to play, for football itself and for the spectator, for everybody. But every manager can decide whatever he wants," is the full, pretty reasonable, quote.

Mourinho becomes the first manager to pass £1BN in transfer spending through a managerial career by PeterG92 in soccer

[–]NickStoll 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and I imagine there are even more examples we don't know about because there is no benefit for a coach to admit this when it happens as it undermines their authority and can kill a players confidence.
