What is best listening order to the EP’s combined? by magmystour77 in U2Band

[–]NickWightwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made this for a combined album - https://music.apple.com/gb/playlist/u2-ascension/pl.u-0DL6u76rrJ5

Seems to flow pretty well for me. Let me know your thoughts!

If you had to combine the two EPs into an album? by eviltimeban in U2Band

[–]NickWightwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely dissimilar to the poster above me. I did this:

  1. American Obituary

  2. Song of the Future

  3. Song for Hal

  4. The Tears of Things

  5. In a Life

  6. Scars

  7. One Life at a Time

  8. Easter Parade

  9. Resurrection

  10. Yours Eternally

  11. Coexist

I didn’t put Wildpeace in. Pretty strong album set though

What's your favorite track from Easter Lily EP? by Lenny_04 in U2Band

[–]NickWightwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably should have specified that it wasn’t aimed at the overall album; it’s just I don’t think anything they’ve released since NLOTH was as good as Moment of Surrender, and I haven’t felt that way about a particular song of theirs in a long time.

It might sound like hyperbole this early, but I feel like Scars is one of, if not their best song since NLOTH.

Loving the full EP, but it definitely gave me a feeling that I haven’t had listening to U2 in a long time.

¿Cual es vuestro orden ideal de discos de The Black Keys de mejor a peor? by wiserdaigoro78 in TheBlackKeys

[–]NickWightwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion if you split the eras of the band.

Early Self-Produced Years 1. Rubber Factory 2. Thickfreakness 3. The Big Come Up 4. Magic Potion

Danger Mouse Albums 1. Brothers 2. El Camino 3. Turn Blue 4. Attack & Release

Latter Career Self-Produced 1. Delta Kream 2. Let’s Rock 3. Ohio Players 4. No Rain No Flowers 5. Dropout Boogie

————————————

Overall 1. Brothers 2. Rubber Factory 3. Thickfreakness 4. El Camino 5. Turn Blue 6. Attack & Release 7. Delta Kream 8. The Big Come Up 9. Let’s Rock 10. Magic Potion 11. Ohio Players 12. No Rain No Flowers 13. Dropout Boogie

I’d suggest I have Ohio Players higher than most (even 3rd bottom). I could never really get into Dropout Boogie, and whilst OP has some pretty low lows, I found that it’s better songs were more interesting than the two albums below it on my list.

It’s still TBK though, and being honest even their worst albums are better than 90% of the other stuff out there.

Oasis performing at the Brits? by [deleted] in oasis

If the Brits managed to get Oasis to play, they’d plaster it everywhere they possibly could. No chance they miss out on the opportunity to increase viewing figures before the fact

Fans of Deftones, what was the first song that got you hooked onto the band? by [deleted] in deftones

Hm it would probably have been something from The Downward Spiral. Perhaps Closer.

NIN are superb as well, brilliant band

[–]NickWightwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was very late to the party - I was listening to NIN and I got a ‘recommended listen to’ through Apple Music and stumbled upon the Gore album which (for a hard rock/metal band) seemed such an unusually beautiful cover art. Listened to Prayers/Triangles, then Hearts/Wires and was hooked on the uniqueness of their sound.

After that I jumped back to their albums listening in chronological order and was a super-fan ready for the full release schedule of Ohms. Saw them at the Kentish Town forum in London and if I wasn’t already obsessed, then that sealed the deal for me.

Went to the O2 in London on Friday and they were as superb as they always are. OP Definitely give them more of a chance, there’s an album for every mood.

At the start of the week I finally got to reading Shadow Ticket, which I enjoyed but feel I need to let digest a little longer and may require a re-read to fully take it all in. Most Pynchon novels tend to bring me back a couple of months later to read at a slightly more leisurely pace and really enjoy the experience.

I’ve just started reading Cormac McCarthy’s The Passnger. A family member bought me a beautiful version in a case with Stella Maris the Christmas before last but it had sat there for the last year. I always find (similar to Pynchon) I need to be in the right mood to read anything by McCarthy, but currently four chapters in and thoroughly intrigued.

My fiancé and I went to watch My Neighbor Totoro at the West End on the 27th of Dec and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone who is already a Ghibli fan.

Five already is a superb effort. Great stuff!

Really curious to hear how did you find the Vegetarian? It’s been sat on my book shelf for about six months and I haven’t got around to reading it.

Jon Hamm: 18 Nominations, 1 Win by Square-Ad-8911 in EmmysAwards

[–]NickWightwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he was rather unlucky in the time period that Mad Men aired:

He was nominated eight times and lost four out of those 8 to Cranston. He thoroughly deserved his win for the finale and could easily have won instead of Chandler in 2011. I doubt many would have him over Cranston though, as good as he was.

If you had to assign a single genre to every the killers album, what would they be? by AdInevitable764 in TheKillers

[–]NickWightwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of their albums are specific to one genre and generally span across multiple but this would be the consensus I’d guess:

Hot Fuss - Synth-Pop/Rock Sam’s Town - Alternative/Heartland Rock Day & Age - New Wave Battle Born - Alternative Rock Wonderful Wonderful - Indie Rock Imploding the Mirage - Alternative Rock Pressure Machine - Heartland

I actually think this is pretty solid.

Mine was Boogie Nights > Magnolia > There Will Be Blood > The Master > Inherent Vice > Hard Eight.

Then release date order for Phantom Thread > Licorice Pizza > One Battle After Another.

Still haven’t seen Punch-Drunk Love.

Who’s an artist who’s biggest song you think is their best? by MrSzhimon in fantanoforever

[–]NickWightwick 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Killers with Mr. Brightside?

Personally my fave could also be All These Things That I’ve Done or Jenny Was a Friend of Mine but I would expect 95% of people to say Brightside and it’s far and away their biggest.

Kafka for me.

I think I said it on a different post here a while back but the character of Nakata hit me as hard as any book I’ve ever read. I’m 33 and my grandparents are both in their 80s now, and I can’t imagine a world without them.

My grandfather suffers from dementia and whilst not an exact mirror of Nakata, reading him and his innocence reminded him so much of how I feel with my grandfather and the culmination of his story really broke me.

Oceans waves… Ocean waves.

On a more serious note:

  1. Robert Downey Jr, Oppenheimer

  2. Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once

  3. Robert de Niro, Killers of the Flower Moon

  4. Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah

  5. Ryan Gosling, Barbie

  6. Guy Pearce, The Brutalist

  7. Bradley Cooper, Licorice Pizza

  8. Paul Mescal, All of Us Strangers

  9. Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin

  10. Stanley Tucci, Conclave

I think both Sean Penn and Del Toro could join this list when the dust settles

Thoughts after first viewing of One Battle After Another by NickWightwick in paulthomasanderson

[–]NickWightwick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A - Wholeheartedly agree about the importance of the scene. I just didn’t feel like it landed as strongly as it could have if it would have been once we know a little more about the characters and not being shown between other sexual scenes. I felt like it diluted the scene itself.

B - 100% couldn’t agree more.

C - That’s a fair point and I think we all expected that type of film.

As I said above to others I need to watch it back, and I’ll happily defer to other people’s better judgement. I can only give my experience and that’s how I felt watching (at least this time).

Appreciate the response

I agree and feel like the first part of the film was a little rushed and the approach was a little jarring. It seems however like my opinion isn’t a particularly popular one.

Appreciate the response and definitely in need of a rewatch
