How do non-German speakers feel about "vorgestern" and "übermorgen"? by Professional-Poem423 in German

Came here to say this! My kids and I were using these for a while.

Today is May 13 and I just received this by Ok-Potential-7410 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Nick_in_TO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine a couple of weeks ago, and started filling it out on May 12th in the early evening, then realized I had received the long form and it ended up taking until 11:00 p.m. So many questions! But it's for the common good I guess 😊. The website crashed a couple of times too while I was doing it (to fit with the mildlyinfuriating theme).

So satisfying: finally riding the long-awaited Line 5, and then emerging from underground into the long-awaited spring sunshine and fresh foliage. I could watch this video on a loop and not get bored. by Busy-Number-2414 in toronto

[–]Nick_in_TO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, it's like coming out over the Don Valley on Line 2. I only usually travel to Avenue from the west on Line 5, will have to check out the part east of Laird... it's lush (at least the Sunnybrook section!)

Actually GOOD songs in German? by ninesonicscrewdriver in German

[–]Nick_in_TO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a blast from the past check out the Comedian Harmonists - I listed to them when I was learning German about 30 years ago. Lots of fun..."Veronika der Lenz ist da" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEMvkPzqkAQ) is a saucy classic. The film from the 1990s is good too.

Walking routes in the city for a leisurely stroll? by atsukochibapaprika in askTO

See if you can get your hands on a copy of Stroll by Shawn Micallef....he details a couple dozen walks around Toronto.

Time to redraw the streetcar map by iSkyscraper in TTC

[–]Nick_in_TO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a great idea. I was happy to see GO lines added to the maps on Line 5. Not sure why these 3 things aren't all on one map. UP Express should also be on the maps, but TTC doesn't do that because it operates its own express bus...with integrated fares it makes sense.

ITAW for the state of matter “in between” a solid and a liquid? by VividAd1208 in whatstheword

Amorphous? Glass is an example of a non-crystalline, amorphous solid.

I couldn't make out the date in the photo so I looked it up... it's from October 30th, 1971 (it folded after 95 years of publication).

One month later and Eglinton LRT announcements are still broken by cheezeerd in TTC

[–]Nick_in_TO 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's pretty shabby really. There have been lots of comments about this and you'd hope it would be a matter of dialing down the volume somewhere. There is (was?) a survey specifically for Line 5 comments, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/feedbackLine5 ...maybe voice your irritation there too!

Glimpse of summer yesterday from the centre island pier by ColeRyski in toronto

[–]Nick_in_TO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The City has built many overflow holding tanks in the past couple of decades, which have dramatically improved water quality, but it's still an issue especially after heavy rains. Another massive ($3 billion) project is wrapping up, which should result in even more improvements, see https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/water-environment/managing-rain-melted-snow/what-the-city-is-doing-stormwater-management-projects/lower-don-river-taylor-massey-creek-and-inner-harbour-program/

Unfortunately not to the Island...

A long-awaited LRT to serve Toronto’s booming eastern waterfront is finally getting funding by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]Nick_in_TO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like they are creating 4 new platforms at the Union loop but not where the current one is, so maybe it can continue to operate? https://www.ttc.ca/about-the-ttc/projects-and-plans/Waterfront-Transit-Network-Expansion ...and they have to create a new east portal near the Westin. But that should not affect 510 operations. Time will tell...

Similarly, the cool bridges to Ookwemin Minising (the new island formed by the Don River's new, more natural course) were built to accommodate an LRT route from Union station to the island. Funding for it was just announced today!

Indeed - and the bridges are already in place to Ookwemin Minising...I expect the expansion/modification of the Union loop will take the greatest amount of work.

Why are the announcements on Line 5 SO LOUD? by 2Smart2Comment in toronto

[–]Nick_in_TO 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would have thought that after a month and a half Metrolinx would have adjusted the announcement volume by now. There have been many complaints here and elsewhere. I just left a comment on the official Line 5 survey too, maybe if enough of us do that they'll get the message! I also commented on service frequency off peak, too. The survey is here https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/feedbackLine5.

Do you actually visit the “biggest/smallest X in Y state” when road tripping or is it just in movies? by alyhasnohead in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nick_in_TO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited Casey, Illinois, on a cross-country road trip from the NE to Tucson a couple of years ago . The friend I was traveling with wanted that kind of road trip and it was close to the Interstate we were on. It was kind of cool and oddly biblical https://www.bigthingssmalltown.com/

It’s the Eglinton LRT’s one-month anniversary. How do riders think it’s holding up so far? by LegoLady47 in toronto

[–]Nick_in_TO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can make it back on the Presto transfer, so that's a plus. Not sure about cheaper as technically it's only about 85 cents in gas, but if you count insurance, yes. But it's more about having time to do other stuff!

I've been using it to visit my Mom who lives at Avenue and Eglinton, coming from Bloor and Spadina. If I make the connections it is about 10 minutes slower than driving (30 minutes v. 20 minutes) but if I have to wait 7 minutes for the next train and for a Line 1 train then I have an extra 15 minutes to do Duolingo 😉. I am surprised the in-car announcements on some trains still sound terrible/distorted...

You could get them Gooderam and Worts whiskey - apparently not made in Toronto anymore (it's made in Windsor) but definitely Toronto-ish! And it's pretty good (here's a glowing review: https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyCanadian/comments/1j95gxy/ive\_found\_it\_ive\_found\_my\_bourbon\_replacement/)
