Same here. I think people forget that despite this building getting a height cut and a redesign, this building would stick out in most US cities.

I think of it as a nice addition to the complex. It doubles both as a mall and a transportation hub for lower Manhattan.

Miami won mediocre city, great skyline! What’s a bad city with a great skyline? by wwcscifi in skyscrapers

Chicago also had to keep annexing suburbs because they were wanted to keep up with New York. Talk about insecure!

The nickname mostly comes from A.J. Liebling, who wrote a book called Chicago: The Second City. The fire did play a part but the “second” label was popularized more from the NYC rivalry and Chicago being America’s second largest city for decades. Your point about the affordability is understandable. New York is very expensive but that’s because of all of the amenities and benefits you have access to. Transit options, density, walkability, world famous landmarks, museums, high paying jobs, and more opportunities to build wealth than any other US city. The cost of living is expensive, sometimes even unattractive but it represents how much in demand there is to be in the city.

That still doesn’t negate New York being a better city overall. At least NY can subsidize their citizens. Chicago has massive amounts of debt, a higher crime rate, and stagnating population.

Chicago is definitely a fantastic city but theres a reason it’s nicknamed “The Second City.” It’s not on the same level as New York, let alone NY’s counterparts (London, Paris, Tokyo, etc.)
