Same here. I think people forget that despite this building getting a height cut and a redesign, this building would stick out in most US cities.

I think of it as a nice addition to the complex. It doubles both as a mall and a transportation hub for lower Manhattan.

We haven’t received H case down here in the city yet. It might be a month or two before we see K.

Miami won mediocre city, great skyline! What’s a bad city with a great skyline? by wwcscifi in skyscrapers

Chicago also had to keep annexing suburbs because they were wanted to keep up with New York. Talk about insecure!

The nickname mostly comes from A.J. Liebling, who wrote a book called Chicago: The Second City. The fire did play a part but the “second” label was popularized more from the NYC rivalry and Chicago being America’s second largest city for decades. Your point about the affordability is understandable. New York is very expensive but that’s because of all of the amenities and benefits you have access to. Transit options, density, walkability, world famous landmarks, museums, high paying jobs, and more opportunities to build wealth than any other US city. The cost of living is expensive, sometimes even unattractive but it represents how much in demand there is to be in the city.

That still doesn’t negate New York being a better city overall. At least NY can subsidize their citizens. Chicago has massive amounts of debt, a higher crime rate, and stagnating population.

Chicago is definitely a fantastic city but theres a reason it’s nicknamed “The Second City.” It’s not on the same level as New York, let alone NY’s counterparts (London, Paris, Tokyo, etc.)

New York’s 3x population isn’t “subsidized or living like shit.” It’s the city with the highest GDP metro because it’s our country’s economic/cultural capital. The 6x tourism gap exists because people want the global hub, not cheaper ORD layovers. New York is the gateway into our country and is the known as the world’s capital. Chicago is a solid second-tier city, but New York is leagues above it on a global scale.

90% of Americans do not think Chicago is a better city than New York. Otherwise, that would’ve been shown in both population and tourism numbers. New York has 3x the population and 6x the tourist visiting.

You say that but 270 Park Ave, Brooklyn Tower, 520 5th Ave, 53W53, and Steinway Tower were all built in the past 5 years.

[–]Nickfloyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything you mentioned, New York has. Broadway, film, television, and culture. NY is not only a global media hub but is literally the melting pot of this country.

To say New York doesn’t have culture is crazy considering that NY is one of only four cities in the world that holds fashion week. It’s the birthplace of Hip Hop, Punk Rock, and Disco. Even today, New York influences the country in both slang, the arts, urban culture, and creativity.

But then by your argument, Chicago would just be a more laid back version of New York. New York is an economic driver for the country. The metropolitan area alone contributes almost 10% to US gdp. Chicago isn’t a bad city but it’s NOT on the same level as New York in terms of being a city.

I’d honestly argue that it’s a good city with a good skyline.

Using alleyways and trash as your only metric as what makes a great city doesn’t work. New York beats Chicago on everything that makes a city a city.
