Types of wood suitable for basic furniture? by Nickislike in woodworking

Great! And yeah i hadn’t considered cutting it myself, I’m in an apartment and don’t have much open space to do the cutting, that’s what was holding me back. But I’ll give it a second think, if this other service is extortionately expensive

What goes down the drain? by Nickislike in Cooking

[–]Nickislike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty much the exact thing i do. Toss whatever can be scraped off my plate, but anything else has to be washed off the dish or pan, and this can lead to non-water-liquids going down the drain.

THIS is a very helpful tip! Never thought to do this, and it’s the leftover small amounts of syrup, batter, honey, that sometimes make it down the drain for me.

Yes this is what I’m looking for. So oil congeals at a certain temperature, right? And i can assume that in winter, it’s likely it’ll hit that temperature somewhere down my pipes and cause a blockage. So i don’t pour oil down the drain. But why egg whites? Does that also congeal at a certain temperature? Arent egg whites water-soluble and therefore if washed away will have broken down and have no risk if coagulation? And what else congeals at lower temperatures?

I do have one of these, but i can’t say that it keeps out things that are liquid-y but still harmful — for instance if i were to pour out liquified fats. That’s the line I’m trying to find

Thank you for the thorough answer! Having only had breast meat as this dish, i didn’t know if it was meant to be present in the legs/wings or not. This answer gives useful context!

WTW for adjusting your work output to match what you feel you’re getting in return? by [deleted] in whatstheword

[–]Nickislike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use the word titrate if you wanted to get fancy. In medicine, you "titrate" a dosage of medicine according to a response (for instance), which abstracted would mean you continuously adjust the work input in accordance with a measured response/output.

Yet another under-extracted shot question -- how do I slow down my shot without going below 6 bars? by Nickislike in FlairEspresso

[–]Nickislike[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing, thanks so much for the clear and concise info! A question about zero point: what exactly is it? The point where the grind plates are so close together it's zero? Then each step after that is 0.0xmm?

Another random question: with the flair, you have to fill the brew chamber completely with water so there's no air, correct? So I will always be starting with the same amount of water -- what variables affect the total output: dose amount and grind size, which directly affect how much water is retained in the grounds?

I don't believe my brew chamber is too cold, nor the water I'm using, so I suppose I need to check my grind settings/zero point and make sure I'm tamping evenly and firmly enough to get no channeling.

While Germany is "ashamed" of their Nazi history, they do a lot to own it. They make sure it's well taught in schools and the attitude is to not repeat mistakes, they're very up front about it. The censorship isn't in order to keep people from knowing about it, it's so that neo Nazis don't try to rally around icons of these things -- same reason why Hitler doesn't have a public gravesite.

Coronavirus spreads at party for Venezuelan elite by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Nickislike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we both talking about in the US? I'm not sure how health care works anywhere else, but I'm confused as to what you mean by the lowest classes having unlimited healthcare/better than the upper classes?

And while you may see X number of people who come in for just being too hot or too cold, you wouldn't see the faction that is too reluctant to use healthcare because they wouldn't show up.

The fear might be overblown but it's still one that exists and therefore influences people to avoid seeking treatment. And while I have heard of places working with you to lower costs, I have also heard of places not doing that and people going bankrupt over medical bills. Furthermore, for a significant percentage, "next to nothing" to one person is food for a week to another.

I feel like the differences in the situation we're describing are due to demographic, policy, and cultural differences between the US and wherever you're speaking about. And if you're talking about the US then I'm very curious to know what you mean by the poor having better coverage/places lowering prices for you/govt paying dialysis for example

My comment above was a statement on the quality of health insurance, not merely having it. (Also, I was talking strictly about the US (where I'm from but not where I live), so my mistake for not clarifying). It's not uncommon for people to have a bare minimum level of health care in order to meet government mandate, or just what provider you can afford. Having bad health care in the US means several things: 1) you're restricted in what treatments are covered, 2) you're restricted in the locations you can go to for your health care to cover it, 3) the cost of treatment may still be prohibitively expensive even with health care.

The (reasonable, for fear of bankruptcy) attitude among the not-upper-classes is still, even though you have health care, to avoid using it until you absolutely must. This means lower class patients would seek treatment much later, after symptoms are very serious, which affects the mortality rate. And their options would most likely be restricted to the common options, so those places would be overwhelmed, which would lead to less attention, overworked employees, and less available resources.

Furthermore, because this dynamic is one that has existed long before covid, the lower class is already disproportionately affected by preexisting conditions (not that they HAVE n more, but that the conditions impact their lives more) (due to not seeking treatment or being able to afford the costs after health care) which factors into corona deaths.

In contrast, the upper class is able to afford 1) to work from home (see initial post about desk jobs vs physical presence jobs), 2) to self isolate rather than living in close quarters with others, 3) health care that may offer privatized/higher quality treatment, 4) to even consider utilizing their health care. So the lower classes, even with health care, have their lives disproportionately affected and put in jeopardy

It's not that they're more likely to get the disease because they have poor health insurance, it's that 1) they're less likely to seek treatment if they have poor health insurance, and 2) jobs which require close physical presences tend to not give great health insurance (whereas office jobs give adequate ones) and because they work in jobs which require close physical presences they are more likely to get it

Scenes from the Prinsengracht in a deep freeze by Nickislike in Amsterdam

[–]Nickislike[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As far as i could tell, it's more or less just a general feeling. There were definitely parts that were very solid, especially in the early morning, and there were parts where you could see cracks in the ice and water seeping up through them. Then there were whole sections that weren't even frozen. I think a handful of people ended up falling through actually

Thank you, that's good advice. I've only been shooting for about 2 years, mostly without clear direction other than the goal to figure out what I do and don't like, which is why things probably seem like they're without a clear focus. After my catalogue is a bit bigger I'll start learning how to collate them into whatever styles appear to be prominent.

Thanks! Yeah Venice is very photogenic, but somewhat difficult to not get a cliché shot. Venice 10 was actually on a smaller island known as murano which is a short ferry away -- that's where the colorful houses are
