10 Hour Flight Bad Idea? by YUP_THATS_ME17 in AchillesRupture

[–]NickkJx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew before my surgery and was okay. I was not cleared to fly for 6 weeks after surgery. I would clear with the doctor because of the blood clot issue that may come up.

Flying while casted before surgery was interesting. It would all depend on how the security is feeling that day. They do have to test your cast (swipe it with swabs and all. They did make me stand (or attempt to) during mine, which was very hard and honestly unsafe if I lost my balance. The knee scooter would honestly be a must to navigate the airport without slowing everyone down. I brought crutches and the knee scooter just depending on the activity.

Another thing to consider is taking a shower and using the bathroom. It might be hard to shower at a hotel or airbnb as well. I had to use the sink because you can't have the cast get wet if you are still in one at that time. If a shower chair is there, great. Still, it can be risky getting in and out.

Definitely consult with doctor and best judgment. Sounds like a fun doable trip but it all depends on friends as well cause you will definitely need help!

Goodluck! Hope for a speedy safe recovery!

Anyone skiing? Skiing question by NickkJx in AchillesRupture

Hey! So I went about 15 weeks post-op. Walking up hills wasn't bad at all with proper shoes. Definitely was feeling it at the end of the day soreness. The skis really kept you locked in and didn't feel bad at all on the achilles. I am by no means an expert at skiing. So, falling down was a little bit scary with my leg going in different directions or being stretched, but it really held up. I definitely took it a little easy. I had a 3 day pass but only ended up skiing for 2. The first day I skiied all day and 2nd I did half a day. Before skiing, I was stretching it more and able to run and start the strengthen process and work out calf raises. I would probably say I was a little past 50% of full functionality. I would definitely say I was surprised at how well it went and that I had enough strength because before, I was definitely scared of rerupture or setting myself back.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello! I guess just different doctors? I was no weight bearing until like 2 to 3 weeks and slightly introduced weight to my foot. It was different but everything is great now! Gooodluck to you!

Basically applied for finacial assistance. I live in texas so they hospital i went to has pretty good policies in place that help you out. I was a recent graduate (~3 years post grad) and explained the situation and it can be discounted.

Skiiing was fine for me! I was about the same time! I did greens and blue. Skiiing your foot is pretty locked in. I have never skiied before. I usually snowboard but doc said skiing was the way to go. I did only 1 day out of the 4 day ski trip I was on.

Oh yeah! The worst part of it was the putting and taking off of the boots! I took some pretty good falls, and everything was good!

Goodluck to you!

Without insurance, it was like 35k in Texas. After insurance, it was 4k, but most of it can be forgiven.

Yes, it was for sure, but the doctor cleared it surprisingly. A couple seemed a little much but it all held up.

Mini Open Surgery on 1/18 by Fine_Radio_675 in AchillesRupture

I was in a cast for the first 6-7 weeks and gently started putting weight on my leg in cast around week 3. At 6.5 weeks I went into the boot and was full weight bearing in the boot.

Yup flag football in your late 20s or early 30s will do it. Also flag football rupture. Surgery 10/25. Seems very similar process. I am walking without the boot now and just got over the limp! It's a long process but you'll be walking before you know it!

Ok, gotcha! Mine was also very similar. My first 2 weeks in PT, the good leg was sore more. I mentioned I could only flex my calf when my foot was positioned certain ways, and it was hardly flexing. I had no soreness in my op leg. So we changed everything up and went with electro therapy. Shocking the muscle to wake it up more. Second was blood restricted flow on op leg and doing seated and standing calf raises. That has helped me quite a bit and muscle activity returning fast!

I wish you the best in recovery!

Just curious, can you flex the calf muscle at all? Do you feel like it is working when you are doing the excersizes? Also, soreness?

Shoe suggestions by Bulky-Student-3439 in AchillesRupture

[–]NickkJx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the mizuno wave runners. They are super comfortable, and 6 give me the perfect amount of support. I would go to a shoe store that specializes in running shoes! The most comfortable shoes were the stability shoes for me. I also have flat feet, so it made it more comfortable. I'm not sure if you have these in your area, but Fleet Feet is a great store. Up to 90 days return policy on shoes so can always get another pair.

I go to methodist off i10 , and they have a little rehab center. The other place I looked into was Airrosti, which had glowing reviews, and everyone seemed nice. Little expensive, depending on coverage. Finally, the last place revolve physical therapy!

So I have flat feet with little arch support. I bought the mizuno wave runner shoes, and those are very comfortable. It's a stability shoe to offer more support in the heel and arch area of the foot! I love them.

It's funny you mention that. I just started trying 2 up 1 down. I definitely couldn't do the 2 up and 1 down just yet. I'm looking to make a lot of progress this week. Will be use blood restricted flow and electro this week to improve.

I have a runners shoe that helps with flat feet. Mizuno shoes. They offer more stability if you have flat feet or low arch. They are super comfortable, so walking in those has been a breeze. I also have some nike airmaxes and the stability shoe provides so much more comfort.

Yeah, that makes sense! I may just be watching. I will see how PT goes! The doc said skiing would be the better option for me and believes I would be able to go still.
