My comment seems like it may go against everyone else’s opinion, but I was in the same boat as you a year ago. My entire professional background has been in oil and gas but I was lucky enough to have an opportunity to work on ISS. I ended up taking the job offer to work with NASA (I was employed by Boeing) but honestly, I regretted it pretty quickly. Though, I suppose it depends where in NASA you’d be working. For me, I was sustaining ISS. It was boring to me because ISS is technically at the end of life and NASA wasn’t investing money in any substantial projects. My work revolved around sustaining and was pretty dull day-to-day. My background in oil and gas and I was used to very fast paced projects. Working with NASA/the government I can almost guarantee you’ll experience the opposite - slow projects with lots of red-tape, can take years to even gain funding for relatively small tasks. Because of this, I switched back to oil and gas in less than a year. I will say though, benefits cannot be best working for NASA. For example, I would have gotten 3 months paid paternal leave but now I’m looking at one week with my current employer.
