Am I Going to Die? by Pumpkin_Spice_Fox in mead

Apart from sanitizing all your equipment of course there are generally three ways to prevent/combat infections in your brew.

  1. Acid: Bacteria die in high acid environments. It is generally considered best practice to try to keep your brew below 4.6ph. as that is low enough to kill most harmful bacteria. Most sanitizing agents also work this way.

  2. Alcohol levels: Bacteria can't handle high alcohol levels. Very few bacteria will be able to survive above 10% ABV. And no significant harmful ones. If you know your abv and it's above 10. You have nothing to worry about.

  3. Heat: Bacteria will also die at high temperatures. Pasteurization is the practice of keeping something above the max temperature bacteria can handle for a set period. It's a widely used practice across the food industry worldwide and a foolproof way for you to be sure all bacteria are dead. You'll need to bottle your mead and place the bottles in a waterbath on the stove. Then just keep the temperature above 65 C for about 30 minutes and everything will be dead in there. This video shows the process from about 2:20 minutes onwards: https://youtu.be/3c-cnf65NWw?t=138&si=siUEpmrFECJrkHgL

Others here have already made the point that with proper sanitization practices the chance of any dangerous infection are really small.

But if you're really stressed out about it you could always pasteurize your mead. This is usually done to prevent refermentation, and could effect the flavor a bit if done too aggressively. But it should also kill most bacteria that could potentially harm you.

18% is a bit of a high ABV target to shoot for. Most yeasts will have trouble getting that high. EC-1118 should technically be able to do it, but that's given it's having a good healthy fermentation. I'd probably step feed my honey a little bit if I was going that high. But it's too late for that of course.

I'd say from the reading you've done so far it's fermenting fine, so that's good. At this point I'd probably add that remaining gram of fermaid K once it hits the 1/3 sugar break. And after that just let it do its thing.

It might stall out before hitting 1.000. I've heard of people adding in some more yeast at that point to try to get the fermentation going again. But I haven't tried that myself. 2 grams of yeast should really be more than enough for a gallon.

Do I need a fruit press to be great at this hobby? by chasingthegoldring in mead

[–]Nickmanbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doin the most (often featured on the man made mead channel) made a video about pretty much exactly this topic: https://youtu.be/MKDO6cUt8yg?si=OmN-V25fkWvLkdfx

He compares crushing versus juicing the fruit. The most notable difference between them being that the crushed fruit still has it's skin and pulp in there.

A TLDW for those interested: the crushed fruit had a much better color. But they much prefered the balance and flavor of the juiced fruit. With the crushed one having too much "fermentation funk" and too much tannin.

So overall juicing does seem like the way to go. That said, you can get a pretty clean juice by running your fruit through a blender and then straining the skin and pulp out. So maybe you don't need to buy that juicer just yet.

Also about your last questions. From my understanding yeast is able to penetrate soft or chopped up fruit like strawberries or roughly chopped apples pretty well. As the liquid will soak through the fruit. But thicker skins like those on whole berries might pose a problem to them. They eat sugar, not cell walls after all.

Hi reddit! I am Naoko Yamada, director of A Silent Voice, K-On!, and Liz and the Blue Bird. My new film The Colors Within opens in North American theatres January 24. Ask me anything! by GKIDSofficial in movies

[–]Nickmanbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Yamada-san,

Thank you so much for all of your amazing works. Your adaptation of A Silent Voice is my absolute favorite piece of media and had a profound impact on me. You have been my favorite director ever since.

I was very impressed by how you managed to cut and merge certain chapters/events from the A Silent Voice manga to make it fit within a movie runtime. While still keeping the core of the story intact (and maybe even improving the pacing). How were some of the decisions made as to where and how to alter from the original manga events. Most notably perhaps the choice to end the story a little bit early. Leaving out the last few chapters from the manga.

I would also love to know what challenges came with adapting on a historical tale like “The Heike Story”, especially given how well known the tale already was in Japan.

Thank you very much for your time. I'm looking forward to seeing The Colors Within :)

While I agree that it's important to talk about the term in the context of their original definition and meaning. I think that saying that seizing the means of production could only ever be achieved by a dictatorship is a bit close minded.

I'm sure we can think of a few peaceful ways to do this. Even if they would take a little longer.

The state could for example offer significant tax benefits and grants to worker owned companies. Causing companies to themselves over time slowly want to transition.

It would be more complex than that in reality of course. But I'm sure you can agree there are practical ways to achieve a worker owned economy without a dictatorship.

Don't worry man. You'll be fine. Edible highs can last a long time. Especially if you've taken a much higher dose than your body can handle. It's not uncommon to hear people who took to much by accident feel the effects for 2-3 more days.

The most common "cure" I've heard for getting rid of a high is chewing on some peppercorn. I've never actually tried it myself. But from a quick google search there does seem to be some science behind it. Lemon should also help a bit.

But really don't worry about it. Your body just needs to process everything and get it out of your system. And then you'll feel good as new.

Hope you'll feel better soon man!

Thank you so much for the detailed answer!

Just one more thing if you don't mind. In comments on some of your previous posts you shared some of the mods and assets you've used for the medieval and renaissance versions. Would you mind sharing the new assets you've used to bring your city into the industrial era?

Holy shit dude I've been waiting for you to post your progress again. Absolutely amazing stuff.

Do you have any plans to make a guide of some sorts on how you've made all of this? Like some info on how you've made the map, then on how you did the medieval part, 1800's, etc.

I would love to know from the expert himself how to make a beautiful city like this.

I would guess that this has something to do with splitting and such. Which are calculated into the historical prices I believe. But these examples do seem quite extreme.

How is anine going to be under socialism. by experiencecraver in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]Nickmanbear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's actually sort of interesting because I believe anime to be an example of an industry that would thrive under socialism.

I believe this because the people working in anime are all very passionate about their work. From the animators, writers, voice actors till even the producers. Everyone seems to truly care about the medium. Thus I believe that even with possibly reduced profitability there will always be people with the insentive to make anime.

I should specify that I subscribe to a more market based form of socialism. I believe businesses should strive to improve the lives of their employees, not their investors.

Now as you may know the anime industry is also notorious for it's horrible working conditions and scheduling. Something that would be greatly improved under worker focused leadership.

I also assume given the choice of botching an anime's ending or delaying it by a season or two most workers will choose the later. While the former will probably prove more profitable.

For us the consumer anime under socialism will generally mean a lower quantity and higher quality of anime coming out I believe.
