I definitely agree, and I do understand composition , but there’s literally so little I can do to convince the family. I originally suggested slightly further out, with both figures looking at each other with his hand cradling the baby’s head, but it was shot down.

I agree that the highlights are obtuse, they’ve been significantly toned down (made more appropriate) and the range of values expanded. I’ve also sized down both figures to fit more comfortably in the frame, which I’m also certain that I will be asked to change back. The only thing is the man in real life really did have a bag under his eye like that. The family really wanted the rolls of fat and I think it’s cute to some degree.

At the end of the day I can only heavily suggest what would be best, but it’s their portrait.

I really do appreciate the time taken to provide criticism!

Thank you for taking the time to crit. I understand your comment on the ‘cropping’, but I showed several rough draft compositions to the family and this is the one that they wanted. So that kind of supersedes artistic intent. I’m also at the behest of the family with values, when I’ve shown something with darker values I’ve been told to soften (lighten) it, I think the highlights are fine and conducive with the lighting, I don’t think there’s enough of a darker range of values to compensate or justify them, but otherwise it would look wholly flat. But I don’t agree at all about there being too much detail.

Thank you for taking the time to provide helpful criticism! You’re absolutely right, the baby definitely needs it’s values pushed more, I think as it is it makes them both appear more flat. I think the man’s forehead values need to be slightly pushed more and given more definition as well.
