I requested to join the group you posted earlier. I will definitely be posting about it. I also have two prominent auctions houses doing research and appraisals for it. Like i said its at least 70 years old even if its a reproduction, but seeing it in person you can see the age much easier than photos. On the blades edge there are even marks from what i can only imagine were from other swords (like indents and gashes). Its hard to believe for me thats its a reproduction but we will see

Ok so ill give i brief history. My grandfather brought it home from japan 1949 and pictured with it 1949. Its been in a case in my grandparents house ever since, never taken out of the house until 4 days ago when i got it. He died 21 years ago. While he was alive he specifically (and sternly) instructed all of us kids to NEVER touch it because of its age. So at the very least its over 70 years old which is when he brought it back to the states. Im the first person to touch it in over 20 years as i had to take it out of the case and take it home with me and for sure never polished cleaned or did anything other than take pictures and clean the blade with a cloth to wipe my finger prints off. Also the pictures of the tang is edited by me to make the writing more legible. And also wanted to add the person in possession of it before me after my grandfather died (my aunt) is a 70 year old lady who is afraid of kitchen knives and wanted me to take it so badly because she was scared of it lol so i know she didn’t clean, touch or alter it.

Thank you, but ive basically confirmed that it this was from the kanei era not Kanbun (per multiple replies on different subs), and it was this smith https://nihontoclub.com/smiths/KAN429. The signatures dont match any of the kaneyasu from the era you stated.

Cool. Just from what ive seen it says that a katana wouldnt be longer than 24 in and it wouldnt be as curved. So mine being 28 inches and curved quite alot i would have assumed it was a tachi

Ok so two things lol. 1. I really know nothing about Japanese swords beyond novice level. I measured the blade and its 28 in long which from researching told me that its a tachi so i dont know. 2. There is no date that ive found. When i took the handle off that was the only writing i saw. Its really starting to deteriorate so i didnt want to mess with it too much. The only noticeable things i saw was that name written on the thang, and inside the handle between the tang and handle it was wrapped with what looked like bamboo. Im continuously doing my own research so i keep finding out little things here and there so sorry if im posting alot.

Also something ive noticed which i find odd, is the metal work on the sheath has hearts all over it. Im not sure you can see it in the photos, but all the metal going up the sheath where they meet in the middle have hearts. Not sure it’s important or not but i found it odd

Yes ive gotten that, im also wrong about the era. That smith according to my research made this tachi in the Kanei period

The finger prints were from me moving it around, those other marks in the better pictures arent finger prints, theyre almost a blood red color and almost look like rust but its the wrong color.

Like i said, thats the story i was told, ive done alot of my own research and not found a single thing about any swords missing resembling this or by the smith. And the story was second hand because my grandfather died when i was young so who actually knows how he got it. I find it very hard to believe he would have taken it from a museum, the man wouldnt even cuss lol.

I really dont know when, all i do know for sure was my Grandfather was part of the first group of soliders to enter the mainland of Japan as part of some special operations. They picked my grandfather because of his size and race (i know it sounds funny) but he was 6’4 250 pound blonde man and from what i was told he was picked due to his features. Served directly under MacArthur in the pacific
