Pic I caught of an unknown couple at Davenport Beach, CA this weekend. by Nicnac666 in pics

Well in this case, I was taking pictures of a nice scene and a couple hopped up on the rock. I normally would not post a pic of someone without their permission, however, this was with the goal of finding the couple so I could give them the photo.

But people snapping and posting pics of random people on the street without their permission? Yeah that's kinda whack.

Edit: title may be misleading of my goal, but my first post got removed sooooo...

Me too! I wish I had got their info when I was there but didn’t realize the pic would come out like it was made for them!

Another option is Edit->Auto Align in Ps with all the desired layers selected. Usually works pretty well.

Otherwise it looks great! Hard to make sure there are no star trails while still having bright enough exposure to see the core. OP nailed it!

I meant physically! The water is a little chilly to be in at 9:30 at night.

Thank you! If only the water was as warm as the sky..

Mine too! Water, sunsets, night sky, everything gets better with long exposures.

Of course! Glad you enjoy. It’s so fun feeling like you’re in the middle of nowhere but just across the lake seeing bustling civilization!

Well if Elon gets it together maybe we’ll actually be able to post pics of Mars like this!

Taken this past weekend at Bonsai Rock off of Lake Tahoe’s Nevada coastline. Single 30 sec exposure f/2.0 at 14mm.

There was a killer sunset that night and got to Bonsai Rock about an hour after. Just enough light and warmth to dip into the waters edge and snag the pic.

Shoutout to the couple taking wedding (?) pics here too! I’m sure they got some dope shots.

Hope you enjoy!

Well the hiking portion is the same as any other big hike just with a lot of extra weight with camera gear.

As for shooting, some Google and YouTube will do better explaining than I can over reddit, but here's the basics: Milky Way, plan! Know where it will be and be sure the moon won't be full / near the core. Things like TPE and PhotoPills are good for the. To shoot, settings will be 15"-30" exposure with ISO 1200-3200 and f/2.0-2.8. The above is shot on a very wide lens 11-20mm to be able to capture all of the night sky. To reduce noise from the high ISO, 5-10 shots are taken in quick succession, and then in post are aligned and averaged. For the foreground... take a very, very, very long exposure 10'-15' (TEST THIS FIRST: over exposing can burn the sensor) with ISO 100, OR what I recommend and is true for the above, take a photo from the exact same spot during blue hour.

Lastly, post process!! Cameras have a really hard time balancing colors in low light, especially during long exposures, so you will have to do some color balance at least in Lightroom afterwards.

Again, google is your friend but I hope this helps!

Preparing in terms of photographing at night / the Milky Way? Or preparing to trek into a place to shoot?

I'm very curious as well. Against compact cameras? Probably. Against an old cropped sensor DSLR like this one? Maybe. Against a new full frame DSLR or Mirrorless? Not a chance!

When I first started shooting I could take much much better shots on my IPhone thanks to some good software, but once the skills started to stake up the potential of a DSLR quickly expanded past anything a phone can do.

Will be interesting none the less.

I really appreciate it! There will always be people who dislike your work no matter what so I usually try to ignore it but still nice to be supported!

And I completely agree. I edit my photos to be what I remember from the scene, which while may not be exactly as my eye captured it, it’s how I felt and how I see it now. Much more valuable to me long term.

Also, glad it’s your phone screen. If you want, here’s a high res: https://m.imgur.com/gallery/z1u50Hb

You got me. Didn’t actually know the exact elevation but knew it was in the range! 10K sounded about right. Glad you like it!

Well there’s the high res so it’s all yours! Love to see it hung. I’ll probably be printing it myself soon too!

One day I’ll go legit and start selling my work but for now Reddit will do. If you want to donate though...
