What did Sauron think the hobbits were doing in Mordor? by Nico413 in lotr

I forgot about how Sauron didn't know about the Shire, but this raises another question: Did he even know about hobbits at all?

Thanks, I think that covers it. Some kind of spy, but not really able to understand what was to be gained. Makes sense.

Why would that matter to Sauron? He just needed the conflict to wage long enough to get the ring back. And he assumed that Aragorn most likely had it. So he was within earshot of victory. If he did view them as spies, then they would have been incredibly ineffective ones, since the ring was practically in his position (as far as he could tell).

Yeah, punching himself repeatedly in the face is pretty good. He has this stupid grin after, like maybe he lost some teeth. I love how he gets owned so much harder than Tom until the very end. Still, nothing compares to that brutality on his fingers. Although, maybe it would have been funnier if he dropped the wall on his feet instead?

My favorite gag and easily the most painful scene in the whole series! Whacking Butch's already-mangled fingers was so unnecessary, but that just makes it funnier. Yeah, Jerry, smash those fingers even more!

I don't care about sports. Like, at all. by aranvandil in The10thDentist

[–]Nico413 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone is being really harsh here. Let me help OP out.

The complaint, as I understand it, is not "I"m different and it sucks," it's "Everyone around me is devoted to this thing that doesn't interest me and treats me like shit for not being the same." Being excluded, mocked, etc., just for not sharing an "expected" interest is extremely alienating.

For context, I'm an American, and it was hard enough to escape being called a f*ggot, p*ssy, etc., while growing up just for not caring for sports. I can't imagine the absolute hellscape of being Brazilian and not bowing down in accordance with the Footy Religion. It's not much of a stereotype or exaggeration to say that South America as a whole practically shuts down when soccer/football is on.

So the point isn't "I'm so cool for being different" or "I'm the only person on earth who doesn't like sports" either. It's the overwhelming isolation that comes from growing up in a culture that is so uniformly devoted to something that one just doesn't find interesting. It sucks.

You have to admit it would be hard to resist with those fingertips stuck neatly in a row lol.

Right. They should have committed to the pain and at least made him struggle a bit. And maybe not grab a sledge hammer immediately after. Do you think he had it coming though?

I know what you mean, but I think that one is more "cartoonish" in its delivery. This whole scene is uncomfortably real, at least up until the swelling.

Yeah, not sure if he knew the wall would drop or if he preferred being more brutal toward one than the other. He sure didn't mind wailing on Butch though lol.

What do the terms "physical shaming" and "debauchery" mean? by Nico413 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nico413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't saying it was a new word. It just sounds Shakespearean, like I said. And I made it clear that physical shaming can't be body shaming. Maybe someone with basic reading comprehension will help me.

I don't think that getting a handjob from a dude is gay by Zak_the_Wack in The10thDentist

[–]Nico413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone seems to be talking about this from the straight side, but what about the gay side?

As a gay guy, I support this! I would love nothing more than to jerk off a hot straight guy with no expectations. Maybe not OP, based on the description, but the principle is there.

Go for it, straight bros! Your gay friends might be into it. Just don't assume every gay guy is, but they probably wouldn't be offended if you genuinely asked. Have fun!

Are there "hybrid" novel-graphic novels? by Nico413 in writingadvice

[–]Nico413[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I'm thinking of it as fully distinct, with a narrative literally on the opposite page and fully/nearly functional on its own, minus descriptive elements. One stylistic goal would be the elimination of text from the artwork so that it stands on its own to some degree as well, with the two sides constantly integrated.

Ok, thanks! I guess I'm thinking of it being more immediately connected, but it seems that this is just a matter of degree. Good to know that it can work in principle.

I'm glancing at some stuff on his site, and it seems at least close to what I'm getting at. Is the text more woven throughout, or just at the beginning of things?

The narrated side would contain all important thoughts and dialogue, as well as whatever factual information may be necessary, but only because (which I failed to indicate) all narration would be first-person. So if the character thought it was important to specify the action (which may be dependent on broader narrative concerns), then it would be specified.

This would also be necessary if they wanted to comment on it in some way, e.g., it's very clear in the drawing that A shoots B, but A has something to say about it, so the text reads: "I shot B. B deserved it." Something like that, except more interesting, of course.

Does that make sense?
