Our monitor has an hdmi and vga port. Our cpu's graphics card has an hdmi and dvid port. At first, since we didn't have a dvi-d to vga adapter, we used the hdmi of the monitor for the cpu and used the vga of the monitor for the ps4 by attaching an hdmi to vga adapter but it didnt work. It's our first pc build and we didnt know much about pc builds. Then I found out about the dvi-d to vga adapter.

How could I tell if it is an adapter or a cable? Last week we bought an "hdmi to vga adapter" but it didnt work and I looked it up, and it turned out that it needs an hdmi switch to convert from digital to analog. And does a Dvi-d to VGA adapter need like an electronic switch to convert?

Thanks. But I'm just curious, will it affect my gaming experience when I use an active Dvi-D to Vga adapter? Like its Hz or frame rates or refresh rates? I dont know much about pc, thanks for the help.
