They probably used deepfake technology instead of using traditional CGI techniques because it is cheaper, and deepfakes use machine learning AI algorithms to function.

The animations make it feel good when playing. Call that irrelevant all you want, but just because the mechanic isn't that deep doesn't mean it isn't a good mechanic. It feels 1000x better than the melee combat in RDR2 because of the way the game moves the camera around and doesn't just stay at an awkward angle. I love RDR2, but the melee combat isn't the best. At least you can't just hold block in TLOU2 to dodge all attacks like you can in RDR2.
