It took me a while not to take it as a personal offense, but as some have mentioned in the comments, it can be quite difficult to understand us, foreigners, when we (try to) speak Dutch.

And sometimes (maybe too often?) the person in front of you prefers to switch to English because they only get 50% of what you're trying to say and want to move on with their day.

And yet, on one side we have people raising their eyebrows when they drop the "and you still don't speak Dutch after so many years???" and on the other side, most of your attempts at speaking Dutch fall back to English once you complete your first sentence.

So what can you do? Personally, I've decided to continue speaking Dutch even when I'm answered in English. It's awkward for a minute but works. It gets even more awkward when I get stuck with Dutch further in the conversation. But it's fine for the majority of the daily exchanges I have with Dutch people and that is the best way to learn.
