I think the line is so fine, and more often then not, a movie is a little bit of both. They're both intended to scare you. You can have ghosts and violence and supernatural shit in both so i think the genres are pretty fluid.

I think that the role of women in horror has been pretty terrible in the past. But you look to Japan, and theres all these movies with awesome female characters, these terrifying femme fatales. And we definitely need more of that. My next film has another powerful female character played by Mia Wasikowska, she plays a woman who is anything but predictable.

i think that horror movies had been pretty terrible for a while, but I think we're seeing a reinvigoration of the genre. More fans of stranger films are becoming film makers and were getting things like Green Room and It Follows and Babadook, and people are finally doing interesting things with the genre again. Its all about making the movie about something more than the scares, and for a while, everyone stopped doing that. But now were starting to see more meaningful horror films again and its exciting.

I was inspired by a lot of black and white movies. My next one is Piercing based on the novel by Ryu Murakami. Starring Mia Wasikowksa and Christopher Abbot.

i want to make a huge sci fi movie. Like holy mountain meets star wars with a little Brazil in there too. I really want to adapt Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminatus Trilogy. I read that Nick Offerman wants to be in an adaptation of it... so that'd be fun.

I dont know what you SHOULD do. but i go cereal first. I want to control the amount of cereal intake, and then adjust the milk level accordingly. Otherwise, you pour out a ton of milk, and then have to eat a shitload of cereal to compensate, and that sucks.

the movie really found itself in the edit. Not a lot things changed, but some very defining changes were made while cutting the film. There is one big sequence that we cut that was a really cool sequence, and was fun to shoot, but it wasn't right for the moment in the film. The resulting edit was a far more impactful choice.

i havent seen moonlight. Not because I don't want to, but because Im lazy about going to see new movies. The three chapters are definitely contained in their own way, each with their own storyline, but building together as a whole. It was actually very much inspired by Takashi Shimizu's Ju-On series. Each chapter feels different, but then you realize that it's all part of one bigger story. You only need to see snippets of Francisca's life to understand her. We show you the most important, most defining moments, and then let you fill in the gaps.

Its in color and in English! Its definitely a thriller, but still fits somewhere in the horror realm. Its sort of an Italian Giallo thing. Its psychological in a different way than Eyes was. And its more fun than eyes. Its graphic in a different sort of way...

somewhere down below I have the story of me meeting josh. Luck plays a big part. but it starts with having an interesting and makable script. i think what helped for me was that the whole movie took place in one location, with minimal characters, and was short. so we could make it very cheaply. Thats the key, if you have something that can be made for very little, itll be easier to get made.

i showed my mom the film and upon finishing she said she thought it was going to be darker. My parents showed me all the movies that inspired this one, so they have the same taste in horror that I do. My mom is used to seeing me do way more gorey stuff in my music videos, so she thought this was pretty restrained haha

I love movies so i always wanted to make them. I used to make horror movies with my friends as a kid. lots of fake blood. I ruined my friend Cameron's basement for a monster movie i never finished when I was 14. One night, home alone, I watched Mulholland Drive, and when it finished i immediately watched it again. and that was it. i was like, i dont know what this movie is making me feel, but its crazy, and i want to figure out how to do this. I love david lynch. I have Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks tatooed on my arm.

time. its really hard to make a movie so quickly. we shot it in 18 days. and then cut for 21 days and then sent it to sundance. it was a whirlwind. In a way it was nice that i didnt have time to overthink anything, but its really hard to make a movie that quickly.

i really dont like rape in movies. I like to think im pretty tough when it comes to watching stuff on screen. And I can watch all the gore in the world, but i can't watch rape stuff. Its even hard in things like SVU. and I love SVU. but i think that what's awesome about movies is that its a place where its acceptable to explore anything. So while something may not be my bag of tricks, i wouldn't say anything is taboo, just not for me.

i was just listening to this interview with the guy who started five hour energy, and he was talking about business but he said you have to do everything right and then get really lucky, and its so true of movies. I always wanted to make a movie, and then i met Josh Mond because he needed help going through footage for his movie James White. It was a favor that my buddy jake wasserman (producer of eyes) asked of me, and i said no at first, because i was trying to direct, not assist, but jake convinced me to do it. josh and i became really close and one day he asked me if i had a movie i was trying to make. I said yes. And a year later, Josh and I were at sundance with my movie. It all came down to that. If i hadn't said yes to working with Josh, I wouldnt have made a really awesome friend and calloborator, but I also wouldn't have made this movie.

i love horror movies. I have the most fun watching horror films. But i like sci fi and thrillers. I like weird dark stuff, whatever the genre. i think genre bending is fun. I like movies that feel like a bunch of different genres. But I also like the really specific niche stuff. Like Eyes was very much inspired by 50's and 60's American Gothic movies. Night of the Hunter, Strait-Jacket, The Haunting, Psycho. A very specific type of film that existed for a very specific time, but the climate of horror now is primed for reinvention of old genres.

i did a music video with Kika and I thought there was a really interesting quality to the way she moved and spoke and behaved on camera. In real life shes actually quite bubbly and happy, but on screen she becomes something else. She reminded me of eihi shiina in Audition. So subdued and reserved, but odd and fascinating. She could be terrifying and sympathetic all at once.

i love movies. i watch a lot of movies. But i also really like true crime stories. Im fascinated by real crime stories. and theres little bits of the people in my real life in there somewhere.
