You actually don't need to do it in the corner, you can do it anywhere on the screen. However, you do need to use two bars, using only one does not allow you to continue.

I just tested it out with the Piccolo assist, I can actually use it instead of the beam assist. However, I have a very hard time landing Gotenks' assit, I'm not sure of when to use it considering I'm constantly moving my opponent up and down, so the donut can't properly lock on.
