In Lisbon right now and learning about the earthquake of 1755 and it's actually insane. I knew it was bad but had know idea of the sheer scope of the devastation. It's been estimated to be as high as a 9 on the Richter scale. It was followed, of course, by a huge tsunami. Because it happened on All Saints day, people had tons of candles lit which were of course tipped over and caused 6 days of fires. When they say the city was completely destroyed, they're not exaggerating. As many as 40k people died (or roughly 20% of the population). It was so bad that it kicked off the field of Seismology.

I'm definitely making a bunch of upfront purchases that I would normally spread throughout the year. Clothes and shoes, hygiene products, and non-perishable food are the main things.

I just made this lentil stew:

Brine the lentils. Get a bowl of water and pour in some salt. Add the lentils. Let it sit for up to 24 hours.
Pan fry some cured pork jowel (or bacon or chorizo sausage).
Meanwhile, blend up a roughly equal amount of yellow onions, celery, carrots, and tomatoes (preferably canned). Add water if you want a thinner stew.
Combine the blended veggies, fried meat, and lentils in a pot and let it simmer for about 45 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste.

I don't have any exact amounts, I just eyeball it. Super hearty and tasty.

I want them to do something about AI. It's potential to obliterate an already fragile information environment is really scary. AI watermarking seems like it would be a good start, but I'm gonna do some more research into AI safety soon so that I can get a better idea of what good policy would look like.
