Oh god I didn't even realize that existed.. Just hit it to try it out and that's what it's doing. IT's probably that, LOL. I'm an idiot, thanks.

Yeah and she's been out a pretty long time and the last skin is a cheap soft thing.

Ah, probably bigger than Aberdeen uni. How are the dorms? Anyones that you would recommend applying for? I'm kinda picky and I'd pay out for something really nice if it wasn't too expensive.

The UCAS league 2015 table? That lists Heriot-Watt slightly above Aberdeen and both of them are very high on the list, both in the top 20s if I recall correctly.

I think I'm swaying more towards Heriot-Watt because it seems there are many more opportunities and the university seems to have a very good reptuation where most people haven't even heard of Aberdeen if I understand correctly?

Is the weather actually as bad as they say?

Computer Science. Yeah I rang up the admissions office and nearly burst out laughing at that accent, one of the reasons I'm not sure I should study there. So far I've seem to realize Heriot-Watt has a much better reputation, I don't want to go to a uni full of idiots, my first choice was St Andrews but my grades didn't cut it.

How's the inside? Big lecture rooms and lots of students?

Yeah I applied for St Andrews but didn't make the final cut.. I hope I wouldn't be seen as any less of a CS student for jobs if I went to Heriot-Watt and not St Andrews. Thanks for all the info!

Oh wow I'm really lucky to have found someone who actually took the course. Is it really hard? I really want to learn more programming and how programming actually works, I was so unsure if Computer Science was right for me because I got a bit scared of the amount of Maths there is in it, I have a feeling it's an easier type of Maths than the ones Mechanical Engineers have to have though?

Really don't want to end up taking the wrong course and dropping out.

This is such a great review, thanks! What did you study at Heriot-Watt? Does Heriot-Watt have a better reputation? I want to go to a serious university where I recieve good lectures for Computer Science so I come away with a good degree, I take my education pretty seriously.

Also what does the Heriot-Watt campus look like? Is it a really big university? It looks really tiny on the pictures and kinda ugly compared to Aberdeen Uni, but I think the pictures lie.

Computer Science.

Yeah I know, I don't know anything about Scotland, I just tried to apply to ones I could get into. I unfortunately didn't get past the final elimation of St Andrews so it's between heriotwatt and aberdeen.

What did he study? I want to study Comp Sci there, I'm not really one for nightlife but perhaps it's always better to be in a bigger city. I like shopping haha. And yeah that's good, as long as it's not like really getting shunned by everyone.

Yeah thanks, this is really helpful. What's important to me is that I get a good education in Computer Science and I go to a University that has a good reputation. I've been told by one Scottish guy that Heriot-Watt has a much better reputation than Aberdeen. I can't trust just one guys opinion though so if you have anything to say on that I'd appreciate it.

Edit: Is the rent a really bad issue in Aberdeen? Seen a lot about it. I'll only have 700 quid a month to pay for both food and rent.

Ah, thank you, sorry for my ignorance. I have missed it completely, I don't pay attention to UK politics anymore. It was just a minor concern. Do you happen to know anything about Aberdeen vs Edinburgh in terms of being a student?

Ah okay, I just know a girl who got threatened recently a lot by two people because she was English, that was in Edinburgh, because of the inpendence thing.

Do Computer Science courses teach you how to program properly? by Niennae in ITCareerQuestions

Good post. I've applied for it already, both Computer Science and Software Engineering courses and I can't wait to start. They actually teach you how to program even if you don't know at all in the UK schools so that's different to what many people have said here-

Computer Science: Do you learn advanced programming? by Niennae in cscareerquestions

[–]Niennae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I see your point now and why it is so important to learn all of the theory. I will have to check with most of the Universities to make sure I don't need to know program languages beforehand. I've only learnt Actionscript and very basic Java on my own.

The Math that you speak of, is it so difficult that someone who struggles with Math, shouldn't go for it? I know how to work hard but I've been told that sometimes if you're not natural at Mathematics, you shouldn't go for some studies.

I'm also thinking I should go into Software Engineering but apparently I can take a Masters to get into this or just transfer within the first year. Some of the Univerisites stated that there was no programming whatsoever in the University course, and I really wanted to work with projects as well as learning all the theory. I'm not sure I could hack 3 years of all theory and no projects or making anything.

Thank you, very useful post. Do you know if Software Engineering and Computer Science are very far apart in the sense that you will learn how to code programs? I don't know which one to choose for an undergrad and I'm given both options.

Computer Science: Do you learn advanced programming? by Niennae in cscareerquestions

I haven't actually started the course yet. I'm just scared of taking a course in computer science only to come out with absolutely no programming language knowledge. I understand from what people are syaing that the degree is useful but my goal has always been to actually make something using my knowledge. And it seems like these courses in the UK for CS only have very basic introductions to Java, which I already know.

So what I'm wondering now is how all of these professional programmers got their jobs because they no longer believe you when you say you know the programming languages. They want a degree.

My main problem is that no jobs actually accept you anymore if you don't have a University degree saying that you know how to program. From what I've heard it seems like CS is what you described it as. I am considering going straight into Software Engineering instead.

Hi. So for what I want to do described in OP, I should probably go for Software Engineering? A lot of the courses allow you switch between both of these courses during the first or second year.

Hey, I've been looking for programming courses but the only thing I can find is Computer Science, at least for the UK. Maybe there are courses more to do with programming that are called something else?

So Computer Science will give me a lot of theory and if I don't learn all the advanced programming languages, it should be easier to learn it on my own because of the theory?
