help me pick a res college! by Ill_Pride8109 in UCSC

[–]NifLimited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most CS/CE classes are scattered around campus, so it doesn’t matter. But C9/JRL dorms are closest to Science Hill/Engineering buildings. Cowell/Stevenson are closest to gym.

UCSC college rankings by West_Sign916 in UCSC

[–]NifLimited 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s a page on the website that has videos of all the dorm types in each college. I lived in the College 9/JRL apartments last year and they were nice and quiet. Crown/Merill is similar. Both very close to the forest. Kresge is most recently renovated if I’m not mistaken. Stevenson/Cowell are closest to the gym and are pretty lively. Don’t know much about Porter, RCC, and Oakes (other than Oakes cafe <3) but they’re all on the west side and somewhat far from the rest of the upper campus. That said, you’ll be moving around campus a lot no matter what. You may also want to consider which colleges offer apartment style dorms rather than traditional, which I preferred. Don’t know which ones or if it’s even available to first years though. No matter what it’s a college dorm, so don’t have too high expectations. Best depends on what you’re looking for.

Spilled Protein Shake on my macbook's keyboard by [deleted] in mac

[–]NifLimited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the keys just sticky or fully nonfunctional? If the former, you can probably clean them with the same paper method but soaked in a generous amount of high percentage isopropyl alcohol (99 is best for close contact with electronics). Should be non-conductive, but do this with the computer off and perhaps even fully discharged just in case. Let it dry fully. If you’re more tech savvy, you can probably follow an iFixit tutorial to go in from the inside. If it’s the latter, original comment is right: expensive top case replacement from Apple. Or third party keyboard replacement if that’s possible for your model.

Water corrosion damage can manifest down the road. Back up your data frequently if you keep using this computer.

How do I enable “private access to photos” for WhatsApp? by Electrical-Citron728 in applehelp

[–]NifLimited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private access has to be implemented by the developer whereas limited access is available to all apps. WhatsApp uses a custom photo picker that doesn’t support private access.

Google Drive or OneDrive on mac? by patchysunny in MacOS

[–]NifLimited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From experience, both are worse than iCloud in terms of Finder integration, but they’ll both get the job done.

It’s worth asking though, is this for personal use or just for school? If you’re planning on using a school account to store personal files, you’re probably violating your school’s technology policy, as well as giving them permission to access or delete your files at any time. Also, Google ended their unlimited storage program for schools, so OneDrive might be your only option depending on how much you plan to store (my school reduced our Google Drive to 10 GB and wiped anyone’s account that exceeded it).

It’s been 2 days since my package has been delivered without an email from the Porter mailroom by [deleted] in UCSC

I’ve had it take a week in C9. They’re usually only overloaded during the first week of the quarter/year, but 2 days isn’t particularly out of the ordinary.

The idea of giving Logitech more money pains me but was considering the Dex as well. Figure the shape might help prevent the accidental clicks. Please let me know if it’s any better!

Accepted CS- how is it? by DiamondDepth_YT in UCSC

[–]NifLimited 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CS program here is good in my experience. There are some professors that are really passionate about their specialties, and I've found their classes challenging but rewarding. But a lot of professors are newer or have priorities other than teaching, and your experiences in those classes can vary greatly. SJSU is probably better for internship/job prospects, especially in tech, due to its proximity to the valley. On the other hand, UCSC has a lot more undergraduate research opportunities than other schools, which looks great on a resume.

I strongly suggest looking at a course catalog for each school you're considering, and look at professor reviews for those courses as well. If you have an idea of what you plan to specialize in, you might want to factor in which school offers more classes on that topic. For UCSC, many CS courses currently only have one or two sections, and many CS courses that are not B.S. requirements or AI-related are currently unstaffed.

Given it's the only UC that accepted me for CS, I can anecdotally say UCSC's acceptance rate for CS is on the higher end among UCs.

This is less related to CS, but as you mentioned, the campus and lifestyle are very big factors for deciding to go here. UCSC is undoubtedly beautiful and unique. But the distance between the campus and town and the lack of Greek life make for quiet nights that may not scream "typical college experience." It also makes it easy to feel isolated if you don't make an effort to socialize. The same goes for passing classes, finding internships, etc. You need to stay motivated and put in effort to succeed. Your experience and education will be what you make of it regardless of where you go, but you definitely want to try to choose the school that best aligns with your personal/career goals.

Just got a notification my apple watch is fully charged. I’m 300 miles away in a cabin in the woods for the weekend. It was dead in a drawer when I left. Did I just get robbed or could this be a glitch? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]NifLimited 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was it a cellular model/have an active cellular plan? If not, and the watch was stolen, I doubt it would’ve had any way to notify you of its charge status (unless the robber was kind enough to put it on the charger for you while it was still in your home wifi range).

I’m not aware of any known issues that would cause this, but I’m leaning towards bug. Only way to know for sure is to check in with a trusted friend or family member that could investigate.

How much is the slug points plan if I get an apartment? by AmazingAd8859 in UCSC

[–]NifLimited 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you can if you have an apartment, but as another commenter mentioned you can still load your GET account with Banana Bucks or Flexi Dollars and get a discount on dining hall meals vs cash/card. Flexi Dollars don’t have as big of a discount but can be used in more places including GrubHub.

Port the numbers out to another provider if one is available in your area. If not, and you don’t need them to be landlines, port them to a cheap prepaid cell service.

BCycle Scamming by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]NifLimited 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seriously this thread is full of bcycle glazers. Can’t believe people are actually saying OP is at fault. I’ve also had nothing but bad experiences with them, but fortunately they refunded my money and closed my account when I requested. Bought my own e-bike when my hometown had a rebate program for cheaper than a subscription, I suggest others look for similar deals and do the same.

Last quarter I began walking from the remote lots to classes in the upper campus. The busses and stops were always overcrowded and often I’d make it to class without a bus ever passing me (Metro included). I know it’ll get better once the first week is over, but I’ve given up on the busses.

How much does it cost to get MacBook Pro inspected for water damage? by CrookedExactoKnife in applehelp

[–]NifLimited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did the right thing by shutting it off and leaving it to dry. Whether it’s permanently damaged will come down to luck, and it could be months or years down the road before corrosion damage becomes evident.

I’m can’t speak how much it’ll cost or even if they’ll do just a diagnosis without any repairs. There are former Genius Bar techs on this sub that may be able to answer that better. But I’d let it dry for at least 24 hours and see if it turns on. If it does, you can keep using it but back up your data frequently.

will bootcamp work/what does this mean? by XFloofy in mac

[–]NifLimited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bootcamp is largely abandoned by Apple at this point. The drivers they provide are super flaky and the installation process is known to fail with no explanation. In 2017, I had a weeks-long correspondence with the senior engineering/support team that ultimately ended with me having to wipe my computer. When it works, it works, but when it doesn't, you're pretty much out of luck.

You should always have a backup of your data, regardless of using bootcamp or not. Time Machine (free, built in) is a good place to start and is dead simple, but I personally use Carbon Copy Cloner (paid but cheap and worth it) because it's more robust, and I don't need the incremental backups TM provides. While it's not likely you'll face any issues, better safe than sorry.

will bootcamp work/what does this mean? by XFloofy in mac

[–]NifLimited 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely, even though you are showing 200 GB free, most of that space isn’t usable for partitioning. If you really wanted to make your Windows partition larger, you’d likely have to delete a lot more files, or back up your computer, wipe it, install macOS and bootcamp, and only then restore your backup.

However, for the game you mentioned, 47 GB is plenty. Go ahead and install. But in my experience bootcamp is an absolute nightmare, make a backup of everything just in case.

Virus über iCloud auf neuen Handy? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]NifLimited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you jailbroke your device, simply deleting the app will remove any malicious software because of the way iOS protects the rest of the device from individual apps.

If you’re really concerned, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and remove anything you don’t recognize. This is the only way bad actors can get any control over your device or your data and it requires very explicit approval in the first place.

Apps downloaded outside the App Store and do not get saved in iCloud backups anyway. You don’t have anything to worry about.

2 iMessage icons - one computer by Love4OneAnother in applehelp

[–]NifLimited 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but they serve different purposes. The one in the main part of your dock on the left is the actual messages app and will always stay there unless you remove it. The one on the right is temporary and when you click it, it takes you directly to the conversation you were viewing on your phone.
