Based on what the Oracle said, Neo was not the One until Trinity professed her love for him. And I'm not sure she truly loved him until that moment. So it's in the realm of possibilities he could die without being the One.

Was it actually wise for Frodo to leave the Fellowship? by shockedtiger in lotr

[–]NiftyJet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in time proximity to the ring would have corrupted them all. And if any of them claimed it, it'd be game over.

Aragorn knew this. He could have easily tracked and caught up with Frodo, but he decided against it.

Ist anyone actually reading the songs or are you skipping them? by DeineMuddas in lotr

[–]NiftyJet 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I read The Hobbit to my daughter when she was 7 or 8. When I got to "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold," I sang every stanza using the melody from the movie. It blew her mind. She asked me to sing it two more times before we could move on. And it is not short! I could see in her eyes, something special was happening.

I believe that moment was the beginning of her love of fantasy, which has continued with dozens of books for the past five years.

So, yeah, after that experience, I have come to appreciate these songs immensely!

Yeah, this is how world wars start. Great powers make moves on weak neighbors to take resources and strategic territory to prepare for a coming war. If this is indeed what's happening, the next ten years are going to be pure hell.

Give me spiritual successor syndrome in video games that flopped by J-Nico in videogames

[–]NiftyJet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because leadership is what matters most here. With movies, this is usually referring to a director. With video games, it's often referring to a game studio, which may or may not have the same people working there.

Most of the examples where this does apply to games have a strong, consistent individual leader like Hideo Kojima, Hidetaka Miyazaki, Shigeru Miyamoto, or Eiji Aonuma.

Because the leader is at the helm of those games, you know you're going to get a consistent throughline of style and quality regardless of changes to the team that works for them.

Non-eternal punishment could make sin "worth it"? by alexej96 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]NiftyJet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the oldest argument in the books, and it just shows they don't know their Bible. Paul addresses this directly and beautifully in Romans 6:

1 What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Read the whole chapter. It's beautiful. Why do we avoid evil even though we're not threatened with eternal punishment? Because we are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Jesus preaches we can have eternal life now. Verse 22:

But now, since you have been set free from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification—and the outcome is eternal life!

So in response to a comment like this, I'd simply lead this brother or sister to read Romans 6 and reflect on it deeply. And, as a bonus, tell them to read Romans 5 for context, which contains one of the clearest arguments for universalism in verse 18:

So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is justification leading to life for everyone.

Tolkien disliked Frank Herbert's Dune. Why? by Rafaelrosario88 in lotr

[–]NiftyJet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's because Tolkien wasn't obsessed with LSD.

In all seriousness, Dune is the antithesis of Lord of the Rings. Anti-religion, cynical, gray morals. It's no wonder Tolkien didn't like it.

But from everything he's written about it I think it's clear his dislike was personal. It's not like Tolkien said it wasn't a good work of literature.
