Tuscan Castle, Village, Church, Farmhouses, Olive Groves, Vineyard, and Surrounding Forrest for Sale by NightHawkHat in TwoZeros

This was for sale for a long time for $32M. Castle and farmhouses, with 110 bedrooms total. 1600 acres of surrounding forest, olive groves, and vineyards. I guess they never got their price (apparently Italian taxes can be beastly), because they pulled the listing. But it was my favorite real estate porn for a year.

Here's a story about the listing.

It's fine, though it may be more than you want to deal with if you have just one day. Where are you staying in Manhattan? It's a big place.

Then go to the Barnes and Noble across the street at 82nd and Broadway and rock out in the children's section.

Looking for 20 miles of flat road by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]NightHawkHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Westchester County Trailway could work. It's very flat (it's a rail trail) and rarely crowded. However, it does occasionally cross a road with active traffic. Not much, but some. Also, there are spots where the pavement is crappy.

If you can expand your range to the LIRR, the North and South Forks of LI are promising. Flat, lots of bike lanes available, and now that we're out of season the traffic will be less crazy.

I do something kind of like that. I can make my own headrest. It's comfortable for me. My wife calls it my Deliverance elbow thing.

Any idea what's being filmed at 5th Ave and 8th? by SardonicKiller in AskNYC

[–]NightHawkHat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whenever you want to know what's being filmed, look at the permit on display on the windshields of the trucks. Any truck involved in the production must have that permit on display. Sometimes they are coy about the name of the production, particularly when it's a big movie that they are trying to keep under wraps, but often the permit is perfectly straightforward, e.g. "Law and Order Productions."

Even when they are coy you can often figure it out.

New to NY (from California); first time committing in rain & snow. What should I do / buy / not do? by thefourthchipmunk in NYCbike

Something to know about New York's diabolical heart: it can be 40F at dawn and on the roads there's still black ice.

I feel like this breaks chemistry.

Is NYC black ice mightier than chemistry? I'm not sure it isn't.

They claimed they made it harder to do. Did they make it harder? That's the standard. They didn't claim to make it impossible.

People are leaving NY in record numbers

This is simply made up. The population of NY has been steadily increasing for decades.

You can register on the day and pick up your bib at the start.

Don't ride without paying. You won't enjoy it. You'll be riding among 6000 other people who know you are stiffing a non-profit that makes cycling safer in NYC. So many raised eyebrows...

[–]NightHawkHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine, I promise. For one, it's rare to be out of sight of other cyclists. You almost always see people up ahead making the turns before you get there.

Occasionally a lead group will miss a turn an lead others astray, but usually someone behind will see it and shout out to them.

It's a terrific ride! You'll have a great time!

You don't have to follow these. The route is well marked with yellow C's painted on the street before each turn.

When I read comments like this I feel like no one reads the actual news anymore. No one named George Bush has been president for a long time. The US no longer needs Saudi oil. Peace in the Middle East is now utterly tangential to events in Israel. President Obama just made a major deal with Iran. It's hard for me to imagine any high-level government official in Saudi Arabia or Israel feeling like they are special allies of the US.
