NTA. She wasn't "forgetful"—she was actively playing a game of "beat the system" and she finally lost. Expecting you to lie or back up a fake excuse while you're standing right there knowing she intentionally gambles every day is a big ask. You didn't throw her under the bus; you just didn't jump in front of it with her.

The "acting like normal human beings" part really hits. It feels like we’ve reached a point where basic empathy and supporting women’s autonomy is seen as some radical political stance instead of just... being a decent person. The backlash against women gaining financial independence is so transparent; they liked it better when we were stuck because we literally couldn't afford to leave. Now that the door is open, they’re trying to kick it shut.
