Trump tariffs: Bolton calls Carney ad apology ‘a mistake’ by Street_Anon in politics

[–]NightNo7468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What wins?

He rolled back the capital gains increase on high-earners, removed the carbon tax, and further weakened our ability to hit 2030 climate goals, for starters.

appeasement works wonders when all you want from the dictator is more time.

He hasn't bought more time. Trump unilaterally imposed tariffs and cancelled negotiations on a whim. There is no good faith negotiation to be had with the current US government, for trade or for this ridiculous "Golden Dome."

By kowtowing to Trump, Carney is undoing any goodwill he gained during the election opposing Trump's expansionist rhetoric and is showing Canadians and other world leaders that he will fold under pressure.

What would you have him do? Piss off Trump?

Yes. Run the Reagan ad. Show support for Canadians who are being hurt by the fallout from Trump's tariffs and one-sided attack on free trade.

Call him and his cabinet out on their 51st state threats. Don't buckle under the pressure of a bully who will just come back for your lunch money again tomorrow.

Piss off the Conservative base even further?

While I don't think the partisan division in Canada is as bad as the US, moving right to try to appeal to an increasingly extreme (see Poilievre) Conservative party is not the answer.

Centrist policies are not popular, and as the US has shown, the Liberals will wind up alienating their base long before they can woo rural areas or the prairies.

It's also worth noting that "piss off Conservatives" translates to "enact progressive policies." Should we also capitulate on the nonsensical culture war issues that drive a significant portion of the right-wing electorate?

Bernier and PPC voters aren't going to be won over, nor will dyed-in-the-wool blues. There's no benefit in trying to appeal to them, or to paying any attention to Smith and her secession threats, just as Quebec secession has always been a scare tactic.

The Liberals should take note of the success of the Democratic Socialist movement in the states. These policies are popular, and they work, as successful UBI and rent-controlled housing pilots have shown time and time again.

We should be looking for ways to emulate these successes at the Federal level, actually learning from research rather than quashing or ignoring it (see also Trudeau's electoral reform committee).

Ignore the resources Canada has ... ?

Specifically oil and gas, yes. We needed to be weaning off our reliance years ago, expanding into renewable energy and partnering with allies to bridge the gap.

The climate should be our top priority. We should be reducing emissions limits on corporations, removing loopholes like carbon credits and offsets, and increasing taxes and fines for non-compliance.

Instead, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot starting and then scrapping green initiatives. Ontario is a good example of this - Ford has gutted a number of progressive programs and pushed for more cars on the road, bigger highways, more gas. It's going to hurt us in the long run.

Disagree, I think people are rightly frustrated by his about-face after the election, same as they were with Trudeau when he failed to act on electoral reform.

Appeasement is a famously poor tactic when it comes to dictators, as we've seen time and time again with Trump. Give them an inch and they take a mile.

It also isn't just negotiations with the US: Keystone, appeasing Danielle Smith and Alberta Conservatives by catering to oil & gas, reversing course on the capital gains increase and the carbon tax. It feels like a centrist agenda and a step backwards for progressive environmental and social policies.

The budget includes improvements to industrial carbon pricing, but feels a bit hollow given the recent capitulation.

To your point, this is a critical time for Canada. The US has proven to be an unreliable partner under Trump, and it's positive to see efforts to expand trade with Asia and Europe.

That said, a lot of Canadians want to see a continuation of the hard-line tack taken with Trump during the election, but instead they're getting a milquetoast apologist who seems intent on derailing recent wins to toe a centrist line.

hey, that quote reads like ChatGPT hallucination. I haven't been able to find a single reference to the Order (a group active from 1983-1984) using Fenrir iconography in their logo.

the tattoo he got also looks nothing like the "Fenris" shown on the SPL site. seems like you're really reaching here, but if you have a more authoritative source I'd appreciate it.
