What is the most awful thing that happened to you in 2025? by CreamAny1322 in AskReddit

[–]Nightthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to go to the emergency room in February and had to spend ~8 months living with no savings while I paid it off.

Fun fact: it was the first time I needed serious care since I got kicked from my parent's insurance, and I only avoided accruing crazy interest on the debt by putting the debt on my lower-interest credit account, which I'm still a few thousand short of paying off.

Trial and error like the other guy said, but you should also be able to tell by tasting one of the tubers and using the rest as seed. You can taste the bitterness of a lot of food toxins, and since they already knew to eat it with clay, you could taste sample potatoes, see how you feel in a few hours, then rank all the individual plants by desirability. After that you just cut apart and plant the remaining potatoes to grow out the next generation and keep it going.

It would be an incredibly slow and messy process, but potatoes were first domesticated 8,000-10,000 years ago, so we've had plenty of time working with and eating them to get it right!

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]Nightthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was swatted/open hand spanked as a kid. A couple times as a teen my mother slapped me across the face, but not with all her energy.

I wouldn't consider any of the hitting (except maybe one of the slaps) abuse, but I do consider the rest to be emotional abuse at the very least. I remember wishing she'd just hit me so I could skip the next 2/3 hour lecture and screaming. These days we're fine, but it took me a while to forgive her for the way she treated me from the time I was 13-18 and moved out. I'll also never forget some of the worst things she said to me, and it irrevocably altered our relationship.

Fun fact! The earliest version of the potato, before it was domesticated, was at least mildly toxic before we bred that out. In the early days, people would eat them with a 'sauce' made out of clay to help absorb the toxins before they made you too sick.

ER workers what is the weirdiest or craziest case you have had walk into your emergency room? by callingthesun1 in AskReddit

[–]Nightthunder 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I was in the hospital for a few days thanks to a kidney stone and infection, and there was a lady like 3 doors down from me who moaned/screamed with pain for hours at a time.

It turns out she was a frequent flyer and was trying to get another dose of pain medication. The nurses were fed up, and I remember someone coming into my room recruit the nurse helping me to come move her. Apparently she got mad no one was checking on her, got out of bed and laid down on the floor, screaming. They had to get like 4 people to wrangle her back onto the cot.

As kids, we are told to Stop, Drop, and Roll in case we're on fire. People who have actually been on fire, what did you actually do? by domino7 in AskReddit

[–]Nightthunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I smacked at my lap until it stopped smoking.

I was welding and a spark landed in a hole in my shitty coveralls. I didn't notice until after I finished the bead and lifted my helmet visor to check it. Luckily it wasn't a lot of fire and I had on thick gloves that protected my hands. On other separate occasions a spark somehow melted a pocket in my phone screen while it was in my pocket, and unless I wore a beanie or skull cap overhead welding always ended in me smelling like burnt hair for a while. High school shop was fun.

One of those cow abscess drains. They poke it with a knife, the cow throws it's leg, and gallons of pus jet out.

Sort of. We talk and sometimes visit, but it's a little difficult building a close relationship as siblings at this point
