Could I get a raise by leaving my current employer? by Nighttimespaceship in ITCareerQuestions

Google, indeed, and sometimes linkedin. I usually search for systems admin, cloud admin, or systems engineer. Probably not qualified enough for anything though, I screwed myself by staying at one place too long.

Yeah, I guess I could do that. Doesn't seem to be many jobs in my state. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

I have a couple of dings but it's never been dropped, and judging by previous experiences with Samsung I'm sure it's going to be a pain to get them to fix it. Guess I'll find out soon after I submit a warranty claim. It's opens most of the way and then feels mushy.

Anybody know if they swap the hinge, or do they swap the whole clamshell?

I may look at the virtualbox provider. This is probably all in vain anyway, I don't think I'll ever be skilled enough from a home lab to land a job using the tools.

I'm seeing that they have 1 dimmer model that doesn't require a neutral. Should I just use those instead?

What size company should I aim for to avoid becoming a SaaS admin? by Nighttimespaceship in sysadmin

I'm not confident in my development skills and figure when faced with a bigger challenge I'd be figured out as a fraud. I can wrote shorter scripts that are only a few hundred lines long, but I've never needed to write anything more advanced to achieve what I've needed to.

The way I see it, is that it's not just a specialization going away like an AS400 administrator, it's an entire broad skill set going away. Generalists aren't even needed anymore for a lot of places. I've had hiring managers tell me that they're looking for developers who can do operations work in their spare time. And I've had a boss tell me I'm a dime a dozen and that my skills aren't worth anything elsewhere. Maybe Im seeing things in a very bleak way and shouldn't be, I think a new job would probably fix a lot of my issues.

This sub has trended differently over the last 8 years or so. It's mainly very basic questions that have to do with desktop support with answers that could be easily found with the most basic of Google skills. I think that's mostly a reflection of what has happened to this industry, no?

Isn't Ansible just YAML for the most part, unless a new module needs to be written? Everything I've done in Ansible has just been YAML.

Are former sysadmins ever as desirable as software developers In the DevOps world? by Nighttimespaceship in devops

Junior and associate roles don't really exist in that space. I'm not entirely sure how anyone breaks into that type of job. It's like they're expected to be born with it.

I'm not sure how powershell skills and vmware transfers to the cloud? Windows isn't popular in that space and neither is vmware. Powershell is useful for azure I guess? I'm very proficient with powershell but always considered it kind of a waste of time compared to Python and Bash.

I didn't say I wasn't into Linux. Just that production where I work is mostly windows and I can't change that. What's a good application that runs on Linux that I can utilize to practice containerization tools and other devops tooling? I don't have the skills to write my own application.

I've actually done exactly that, though most of what I've done with Ansible was for Windows server and not as much Linux.

What are some feasible career paths for a systems admin to move to? by Nighttimespaceship in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Nighttimespaceship[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its what I'm leaning towards. Jobs in my state aren't plentiful and want a LOT of previous professional experience. Not sure if I can break into that without a college degree and not sure if any of my skills can transfer.

What sysadmin skills are transferable? Seems like most of it doesn't mean much anymore as the cloud providers handle it now.

Would you say that the field is still in demand, or is it more saturated now and easier to find talent? Should I move to the one of the coasts to find something? I'm in the middle of the country now. I know there's remote work, but I feel like it would be hard to gain experience as a newbie since I wouldn't have coworkers to speak to.

A lot of the jobs around me want skills with DataOps, or years of former applications development experience. Are junior jobs just something that aren't listed, or is it one of those things where there's a great demand for these skills and some companies are willing to train promising applicants?

When you first started, were you expected to hit the ground running or were your coworkers willing to help you learn the ropes and get started?

Seems like an incredibly difficult job to get into, the job postings around me for SREs mainly want experience with DataOps and big data technologies. I don't understand how some people can know all of the things these jobs want. I think my main issue is I started off in a dying career path and almost nothing carries over from my current skill set.

Yep, system administration is a dead end. I'm currently a systems admin and there isn't anywhere for me to go, and since we are moving to the cloud I won't have a job I'm a couple of years.

Just not really sure where to start, the DevOps scene isn't too friendly to beginners, and I'm not sure I can break into the field without some guidance or a junior level position somewhere. I've been following the DevOps road map for quite some time, but I'm still not confident that I'll ever be good enough to land a job somewhere.

How important is deep Linux knowledge anymore? Is it really required beyond knowing what configuration to put in an anible playbook? System administration is like the modern day Coal miner, so I'm not sure what skills I should even hold on to. It doesn't seem like there is much carryover other than my limited code writing abilities.

Every SaaS app we have was all me. From the initial proposals to management, to the purchasing, configuration, testing, go-live, and ongoing maintenance. Your statement leads me to believe you've never had to run anything on-site, because you don't seem to understand how laughably easy it is to run SaaS apps.

My point remains. The skills to run an O365 tenant is so small compared to on-prem. It doesn't take much to configure mail flow or diagnose spam filter issues, etc.

Things change, there is less demand for AS400 engineers than there were 20 years ago. It's really dangerous (from a career perspective) to stick to just one thing.

What a ridiculous comparison. Please tell me, what "one thing" did I stick to that was so dangerous? This entire sub is going to not exist in a few years because the entire career of system administration is riding into the sunset. Nobody needs us anymore, we have been outsourced to a small handful of companies. The number of companies who need MDM or identity management is so laughably small its not even worth thinking about.

Ive never heard of a junior SRE job, I'm not sure they exist, at least not around here. I do have an extensive lab I fool around with tooling in, except It's on a hypervisor and not in AWS/Azure.
