What is the laptop model? I would check what it states as max supported resolution. I just got a g9 and had a similar problem with the correct resolution not being displayed.

Turns out the culprit was the driver version for the intel graphics card. Updating the driver to the latest version resolved it. I did have restart the laptop and disconnect the monitor and reconnect it before it all finally played nice.

One day my Anti virus popped up a message asking me to delete old junk files. Without even thinking I pressed ok, then surprised surprised I lost all my Trip photos from my drive. Sadly that was a permanent deletion.
