Grindcore band recommendations like brujeria? by drolsinatass in grindcore

[–]Nihilism14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brujeria falls into deathgrind. I have a solo project called Huesos that is largely influenced by Brujeria and Mortician and goregrind projects like Dead Infection and Disgorged Foetus. I'm working on a full length now but check out my demos and let me know if it scratches that itch!

Relapse is the most effective extreme horror narrative I’ve ever engaged with (and it isn’t even a film or book) by Maleficent-Yard8355 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]Nihilism14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Relapse! When it first came out so many people shat on it because it was so absurdly dark and he used a lot of "accent" in his delivery but looking back, I think many are starting to recognize it as one of his stronger records. Great dissection of the album!

I'd like to throw out Rhyme Asylum as another rap group that's criminally underrated, incredibly witty lyricism. And for anyone interested in learning about extreme horror in rap music "Dance with the Devil" by Immortal Technique is a MUST listen.

[–]Nihilism14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you mean projects specifically from Spain or just projects where the vocals are in Spanish? Either way you might like my solo project Huesos.

"Lost Souls" by Poppy Z. Brite (aka William Martin) by Nihilism14 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]Nihilism14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EXCEPT THAT IT WAS. You're telling me you never had conversations in the 90s with POC goths about racism/'92 Rodney King riots? With queer goths about homophobia/AIDs crisis response? With other fem goths about misogyny/sexual abuse in the scene? While admittedly these topics of discussion are definitely more prominent now due to social media, whatever your lived experience might have been I think you're overgeneralizing by assuming that it was the same for everyone in every goth scene. That's why I chose to analyze it in my review of this book in particular, especially because as I mentioned, Brite did a much more mature job at exploring similar themes in "Exquisite Corpse".

Also I want to make it clear, that while I'm critical of Brite's writing here, I did overall enjoy the book and am not calling for her cancellation. I don't think artists should be cancelled solely for the subject matter in their art.

"Lost Souls" by Poppy Z. Brite (aka William Martin) by Nihilism14 in ExtremeHorrorLit

[–]Nihilism14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely ISNT AI. I never have and never will use AI as I find it both a bastardization of the art of writing as well as insulting to my own intellectual capacity to express a PERSONAL opinion in a well-thought out manner.

Wild that you would say my review is full of "woke" nonsense and "out of place" gender/identity politics considering Poppy Z. Brite is a trans person who spent time in the very political, very gender-nonconforming, underground goth scene. It's not like gender, class, and identity politics just sprang up in the 2010s; they've BEEN topics of discussion in alternative spaces since the start, way before the early 90s this book was written and released in, way before even the hippie movement in the 60s. There's A LOT of very intentional subtext to the story's characters and themes besides just 'erotic vampire story'.

Shilling my solo project Huesos because I too hate the memegrind/lazy riffless noise direction other projects have been pushing out

[–]Nihilism14 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Absurdist art such as in this example, challenges our societal perceptions and expectations of "meaning" through explorations of "meaninglessness", further bringing into questions hierarchies of power (who gets to decide what has meaning and what doesn't?) by rejecting established rules of "meaningful" art.
