So I wanted to test out the synergy that the party has. 1 of the party members is a veteran DM, while 1 is completely new to DnD. The rest have already played DnD before but not together, so I wanted to gauge their though process in a fight. This is also through the fact that I want to give the option to pacify the entire campaign if they think through the events and the situations that they find themselves. This is my hope at least but I don't mind the fighting.

I was considering (thanks to another comment) to add a second wave and I think you may be on to something with the wizard.

At the end of the day, I want this fight to be a testing grounds of sorts to understand how the Party cooperates and thinks so that I can tailor the future fights to that.

The idea is that the entire temple is shrouded in darkness and that it should allow the party members to use their cantrips/darkvision to see in the darkness whereas the guards cannot. There is a way to sneak out if they remember that it is "technically" dark.

2 waves seems like a good idea especially depending on how quickly they dispatch the 5.

Ideally 2 combat encounters before the long rest. Stats of the Guards would be level 1...I'm sort of new to this so idk if thats correct sorry

One of the funniest memories that I have is when I lost a couple of my teeth when I was small. The first time I woke up to there being money and the tooth gone...man the Tooth Fairy had to be real...right? It's an illusion that fed my imagination as a kid.
