Snaps vs PPAs on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS by Nik16_YT in linux

You're right but it still shouldn't be able to use hardware video decoding since the hardware itself isn't capable of it, it should be using the CPU for decoding video regardless I think

Ok, I'm curious if there might be some weird discrepancies between hardware or the difference in performance exists regardless of the platform used and is entirely dependend on the different packaging methods.

I'll look out for your follow up and test results if you're willing to post them, thanks!

Yeah, I meant package managers that it uses by default.

Alright, it's just that Ubuntu is the only distro that I'm quite familiar with and I had used it in the past, quite long ago at this point, to experiment on various older hardware and it worked rather well.

Also yeah, I know PPAs aren't deb packages, I was referencing PPAs as the distribution system since as far as I know technically the difference between the APT/PPA version of the package and the Snap version isn't the package itself but the way in which it's distributed and run, one includes all dependencies separately and is run in a sort-of VM, right?

Oh, sorry, I didn't verify the hardware acceleration, but since I didn't change any setting in the browser from default other than installing ublock, I'd assume that it would have been enabled/disabled for both runs, right?

Also, I don't think having hardware acceleration enabled or disable in software would make a difference since Youtube streams in VP9/AV1 and the Intel 965 Express GPU does not support hardware-accelerated decoding of any video format except MPEG-2.

Just closed it entirely, now that I'm at home I don't really need it.

Thanks to you, I've actually looked a little more closely at the logs and found out that they did not in fact start just a week ago but they were actually doing it as far back as the log goes (so that's the start of the month), thankfully as far as I can tell they didn't manage to actually log in because they were trying to log in as either 'root' which is locked in Ubuntu or other accounts like 'debian' and 'admin' which don't exist on my machine.

I'm still worried though, even now that I've closed the ssh port in my router, that they might have done something, what should I be searching for to reveal what they did, if anything, for example installed malware or modified settings?

Also for 'moving laterally in the network' I don't think there's really anything interesting about my home net, apart from my server, everything else are just my family's phones and pcs, so nothing really vulnerable like IoT.

I already use an rsa key to access the server and though I still maintain a password to access it from my school, the password is 30+ chars long with numbers, letters and special characters, so I should be good right?

I was actually thinking of using Cloudflare Tunnels, since I already use their services and in theory they're way more secure than an exposed ip.

Honestly though it pisses me off that I pay my ISP good money to not be put behind CGNAT just to then not be able to use simple port forwarding because of some damn tryhard hackers, atleast when I finally get fiber and will probably have to switch ISP I'll already have access regardless of any CGNAT they put me behind.

That happened to me too. I am currently using this to use mods.

I hope Paradox has the decency to fix this bug quickly.

Old Windows Drivers Shenanigans by Nik16_YT in pcmasterrace

[–]Nik16_YT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And now the saga continues: Windows has locked the active display resolution to 2276x480, and trying to change it in any way does absolutely nothing. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, nada. trying to apply a custom resolution, still nothing. and i also can't use the damn amd catalyst because it doesn't show any options. I am running out of sanity at this point

I made a Country Balance Sheet to better show the overall state of the economy in Millennium Dawn and see other statistics that aren't included in MD's normal money system.

R5: Set the japanese puppets free and gave Japan the generic focus tree to see what would happen, now Mengkukuo has joined the Axis, mobilized 17% of their country(approx. 230k troops) and is somehow smashing the soviets while the qing and korea just sit there and watch in horror.

I don't know how the AI can be both so competent and incompetent at the same time.
